auto-fill of hardwareVendor field

fingscan discovers devices on my network and records them, which is helpful. it captures their MAC addresses. it provides a field for HardwareVendor, but it does not populate it automatically.

a quick search in google seems to indicate there are a few packages that do MAC->hardware vendor mapping... anyone tried this?

I can add that. I use it in UniFi.

auto-fill of hardwareVendor field

There’s also a few name resolution methods: that can further enrich the IP/MAC address: dns/dhcp, netbios/wins, bonjour, etc.

Re: auto-fill of hardwareVendor field

I can't get this to work with Fingscan v7.23.12. The Indigo Event Log window shows getting vendor info and I wait and check some random IP-Devices and no Vendor info is showing.

I've restarted Fingscan and repeated above, but no joy.

I don't know if it makes any difference, but none of my IP devices are in the ipDevices Device folder.

I have Internet from my Indigo server as that's the same machine I'm typing this on.

Re: auto-fill of hardwareVendor field

could you try: https://www.dropbox.com/s/kyhigv4y500iitj/fingscan-v-7.23.14.zip?dl=a

with debug LOGIC = on (first set debug on, then load new plugin.. saves one restart)

it will show the details what it is having, trying, and what it gets back from the internet

OK, fingscan v7.23.14 debug came back with this:

I then later see a FINGSCAN initialised message and that's it.

This is a small fraction of the number of IP devices I have registered in Fingscan yet I thought it would be able to resolve many more Vendor addresses than the above list as per https://macvendors.com.

Also notice that it has identified 4 Raspberry Pi's. I went into the configuration of one of these and this is what I get:

Re: auto-fill of hardwareVendor field

This is still not working at all. I don't appear to have one device that's updated with vendor information. I've tried v7.23.15 too :x

Re: auto-fill of hardwareVendor field

HackenCrash:
see the latest download. The device edit fields are empty on purpose. They are used to OVERWRITE the device states hardwareVendor.

You can do a test: put an xx into the hwvendor field of device that is known(e.g. the rpi) , save the device, then the xx should appear in the device state hardware vendor.

Then restart the plugin and the hwvendor field in device states should show again the value it got from the internet.
It will try to get info from the internet if the length of the device/state hwvendor value is < 3 characters -- so using xx would get the info, an xxx would not

Re: auto-fill of hardwareVendor field

Thanks for the tip. I had a bunch of devices whose Vendor ID was a long HTML error from JOLTSOFT.
Most were really Apple devices, so I put 'aa' in the "overrwite HardwareVendor State value", did a soft restart, and they now have vendor ID "Apple". :)
