what to do w mac pro 3,1 2008

As I have moved everything to the "new" mac pro 5,1 (2012) I have a spare 3,1.
Did this as the libs are not up to date (el capitan limitation) on the 3,1. So the python calls to new web sites (https) work any more.

I am looking for suggestions to what to do the the idle 3,1, besides being a 250W heater

Options:
Selling would get me may be $300
install linux
install windows
keep as spare just in case
donate

If it were me, I would sell or donate. That said, I still have one of these sitting around.

Sell or donate, you could build a nicer low-power linux/ESX box for $300 most likely. Although similar to Dave, I still have a working eMac on my workbench in the basement. I use it for absolutely nothing, but will occasionally boot it up just to reminisce for a few minutes....

Love the coffee table (more like a desk?) idea. I have one myself, but I'm saving it as a doorstop for the zombie apocalypse. I'll be safe.

That’s what I did with my 3,1. Haven’t got around to puting Mojave on it yet but it runs better on High Sierra than it did on El Capitain!

I used it to put Mojave on my Mac Mini Server 2011 and it worked fine for a few weeks then I got a few errors so went back to Sierra and still had the errors which turned out to be a failing HDD so swapped out the 2 x 500Gig HDD's with 2 x 250Gig Samsung EVO's and boy does it fly now but have not bothered to upgrade to Mojave again yet but will after I get back from Oz in the new year.

If you decide to sell, let me know, I'd probably buy it... The old MacPro 1,1 that my son/wife uses is pretty much at the end of its life -- though I've upgraded it beyond its "allowed" limits using various techniques, it is finally showing its age. The complaints from the "users" now exceed my tolerance level LOL.

Of course, then I would have to figure out what to do with an old MacPro 1,1... something could be found I am sure.

Re: what to do w mac pro 3,1 2008

I have to design (and make) a gift for my sons wedding .. has to be manual labor and it has to be original and you should not be able to buy it . I still have 7 months
... thinking about an electronic sundial where the sun (LED) moves around a stick and the shadow marks the time

would require some wood or stone work for the base , 3d printing, a motor,, some rpi/arduino, , syncing position of LED w time (also after restart)... sounds like a cool project
