Best Practice: Device State reformatting to a friendly name

So I have a Garage Door Controller which has a device state of On or Off. But in my control pages, I'd like the device state text to show as Open or Closed. What's the best approach for doing this? I assume it would be to declare a variable, keep the variable in sync with the actual door status via a trigger On State Change and show the variable in the control page. Just thought I'd ask if there is an easier way to accomplish this.

Check out the Adapters Plugin, it will let you create a new device that 'converts' the state on/off to open/closed.
