Re: Changes Coming to Weather Underground API

(Back on topic...)

I grab Dark Sky data from two places:

- Perry's plugin, which does a great job with all the basic data
- secondly, I simply took the API endpoint and stuck it into GhostXML. Done. That provides the few fields that Perry's plugin missed (mainly precip related).

More detailed weather, like MOS stuff and real cloud cover data I grab from various other sources.

Re: Changes Coming to Weather Underground API

I've been going through my control pages and changing things to reference either Dark Sky or NOAA Weather Plus plug-in devices. So far so good.

Re: Changes Coming to Weather Underground API

Don't ask for whom the bell tolls, it tolls for Weather Underground. In starting to do research into data alternatives--I wanted to go back to the WU API forums to see what services folks were recommending there. Guess WU had other ideas, because it looks like they've taken down the forums completely. While this may have been planned all along, I'm guessing that they weren't too keen on hosting their own evisceration. The main API page doesn't even provide a link to the docs anymore, although those pages can still be reached through Google.

Right now, I'm leaning towards Dark Sky, which seems to be the best global alternative. It has a largely similar structure and would allow me to continue to support some important features like language. I'll do some leg work into determining what a port would require. There would certainly be some feature loss, but that's to be expected. I surely don't mean for this to be any kind of competition with Perry's excellent Cynical Weather plugin or to imply that it's somehow lacking.

One thing you can count on for sure. If I do come up with an alternative plugin, it will have a new name. :D

It looks like you’re writing a plugin for supporting air fresheners and accidentally sprayed so much you scorched the sky!

Re: Changes Coming to Weather Underground API

So that's what you think it will take for me to rush a plugin for which I have none of the hardware and the API is a hack huh? Good luck with that :P.
