use one ethernet cable for 2 POE devices

This seems to work fine for POE and connection speed 10/100 (not 1GB)

if you have a remote are with just one ethernet cable and no power for a switch combining two ethernet connections into one seems too work:
Cable Matters RJ45 Splitter Ethernet Cable Share Kit in White 100 Mbps (Must Be Used in Pairs, One Unit On Each End of an Ethernet Cable Run)

You need to put 2 cables into your switch into the concentrator, then one longer ethernet cable and the reverse to 2 POE devices (eg one RPI and one camera)
as long as they run <= 100 Gbit.

I have a camera and an RPI in the tree in front of my house, and one ethernet cable. This solution seems to work fine. Not standard, but no issues.

It works as 100Mbit Ethernet POE only uses 2 pairs and the cable has 4, it is setup to use pair 1&1 for A and pair 3&4 for B

Cost is $12 + . There are different versions available, with single jack and 2 plugs or the other way around.
You always need a pair of the same kind, They are sold in pairs

Re: use one ethernet cables for 2 POE devices

I have always been amazed at how in the 10BaseT and 100BaseT standards (10 Mbps and 100 Mbps, respectively) only four (two pairs) of the wires are actually used. 10BaseT came out in 1990, 100BaseT in 1995 and Gigabit Ethernet in 1998 so it took 8 years for Gigabit Ethernet to use all the available pairs in Cat5 cable. There are various reasons as to why 4 pairs were used initially as noted on this ServerFault article.

You don't really need any RJ45 splitters to use this trick for 10BaseT and 100BaseT standards. You can simple do the split yourself at each RJ45 wall plate by having dual RJ 45 sockets. In the early days of my IT career I done that countless times when there was no time to wire new sockets.

Obviously this old hack is slowly dying as more and more devices come with Gigabit speed. Of course you might not need all that speed and be perfectly happy with 10BaseT and 100BaseT speeds.

I mean, doesn’t everybody? Why wouldn’t you have an RPI in your tree?

Why rpi in the tree: No more place in the house to put them.

In a box painted green - not an exciting view

but seriously, I have been tempted.. both to get better beacon detection outside, and to use a pi camera.

Just because I can..

Why wouldn’t you have an RPI in your tree?

This question more-or-less is a summary for all of our automation hobbies. LOL

For the box: Besides waterproofing -the top - I also had to make the bottom where the cables go in ant prof They like the box so much they build their nest in it
