Mac File-Vault 2 and Indigo

Is there an issue if Indigo Server is installed on a drive which is encrypted using File Vault 2?

Thanks.

Indigo can only be installed on a boot drive - are you booting from that drive?

Re: Mac File-Vault 2 and Indigo

Indigo Server is installed and working perfectly on a Mac Mini SSD drive. It is a normal, plain vanilla installation, on a non-partitioned disk. I'm simply wondering what would happen to the Indigo Server if I were to turn on File Vault 2 on that Mac Mini? As you know, File Vault 2 (the current Mac encryption option) encrypts the entire volume. Would operations using Indigo Client on that same volume, or on a Mac connected via a network, or Indigo Touch connected via a network, be normal, or would there be a problem?

A related question: If I left the Mac Mini where Indigo Server is installed alone (NOT turning on File Vault on the Mac Mini), would there be a problem if I were to turn on File Vault 2 on a separate Apple laptop where Indigo Client is installed and links via a wifi network to the Server? Would Indigo still work fine using that Client?

Asked more simply, there are 2 separate questions:
1) Does turning on File Vault 2 on a device where Indigo Server is already installed and operational mess up connections to Indigo Server?
2) Does turning on File Vault 2 on a device where Indigo Client is already installed and operational mess up the use of Indigo Client?

Thanks,
Steve

Re: Mac File-Vault 2 and Indigo

According to Apple, FileVault shouldn't effect applications since they bottleneck all read/write operations to/from the disk. Given Apple's track record, I wouldn't be at all surprised if this is not true. We haven't tested with file vault enabled so YMMV (perhaps there are other users who have that can chime in).

The Indigo Mac client communicates with the Indigo Server through network sockets which shouldn't be affected at all by the format of the disk.

Re: Mac File-Vault 2 and Indigo

I have File-Vault 2 enabled here and haven't had any problems. That said, the Mac I have it enabled on has always had it enabled. So, I don't have any experience going from not having it enabled to having it enabled. I don't believe you will have any Indigo-specific problems though.

Re: Mac File-Vault 2 and Indigo

My Mac Pro has had it enabled on the boot drive long after it was initially setup and no issues for me.

Re: Mac File-Vault 2 and Indigo

I have FileVault turned on my MacBook Pro [Indigo Client] and iMac [Indigo server]. They are both running High Sierra 10.13.4 and both are using APFS volumes.

No problems with either. :)

Do bear in mind that you can't auto login with a File Vault enabled computer, which would limit what you can do remotely to your Indigo running Mac in case of an emergency.
