Right; stop server, unplug old 2414, plug in new 2413, restart server, configure to new 2413 & usb port.
Same USB, same cable, same outlet - though I have tried differnt USB ports & cables, and other mains outlets, ad infinitum.

Just for the hell of it I also tried with the bought-in-december 2413 again; same log issues with link failure, resending and even the 'possible power failure'. Which implies some sort of software issue rather than the unit failing. The annoying thing is that nothing ahs been intentionally changed around the house/insteon/mac setup in a long time.

Have you tried all of the troubleshooting steps in signal troubleshooting guide? The first one would be to run a long outdoor extension cord from a totally different area of the house to the PowerLinc and see if it that behavior persists. The trouble starts when the PowerLinc is trying to talk to something else, which is why I highly recommend trying those things. It is an unusual error to get, but maybe it's just a red herring.

Thanks for the suggestions; looking at the troubleshooting list I seem to have done everything bar isolating every single device.

I have a phaselinc installed at the power panel as well as a fair number of dual band devices. I've tried this whole cycle with it connected as well as not connected, just in case it has a problem.
I have filterlinc things for both UPS. (And I've swapped them around in case one was having a problem).
I have used an extension to connect the PLM to a different mains outlet; I can try more later today.
Signal strength stuff... well we have the same 28 devices as for the last 10 years, no change there.

I don't have any new or changed things in the house - we haven't been able to afford anything! I suppose something might have started to fail though so I'll do the airgap dance around the house and see if anything changes.

The thing that really baffles me is the combination of
a) why is the log showing

which reads like it is saying the connection to the PLM has failed, which is why it looked like the FTDI bug to me
b) why is the ancient 2414 working just fine - aside from not being able to do half the job of talking to some newer insteon devices?

Just as s mall update - some googling suggests I'm far from the only person experiencing this kind of problem and it isn't only "death after warranty".

Then a day later...the replacement also failed, in exactly the same way. If I reboot everything, quit/restart, unplug/replug the USB, etc..., then Indigo can communicate with the 2413U just long enough to say "yes, you're a 2413, great." But as soon as I send any commands, I get the "resending previous command" errors (and occasionally "SendInsteonMessage failed," or "Possible power failure.")

These errors are similar to what we've seen when there is excessive power line noise (or a broken Insteon module sending junk) – it can get the PowerLinc so confused it stops accepting any commands from Indigo and eventually tells Indigo there has been a power failure. Instead of air gapping off all your modules, you could try turning off all the circuit breakers in the house except for the one with your Mac and the PowerLinc on it. If that calms things down then you can turn the breakers back on and try to isolate which one has the gremlin.

Or it could be consecutive malfunctioning PowerLincs. Are you purchasing them from Smarthome? We've had issues in the past with Amazon vendors sending really marginal interfaces, so you might have better luck with one from Smarthome.

Hi Matt,

well I've just spent an afternoon trying out both the breakers-off and airgap-everything (both all at once and one at a time, which really gives you a stair workout) tests and saw no difference at all. Same pattern in all cases; the PLM initially talks to the Mac, fails to connect to the devices that are actually 'love' and then complains about the PLM not being connected. Meanwhile, the ancient 2414 has no problems except being incredibly sllllloooowwwww to sync. Like 40 minutes :-)

I even tried some of the tests with the last-December 2413 PLM just in case, but that behaves exactly the same.

One thing I'm not sure has been noted is that the 2413 *does* see signals from the assorted devices; if I operate a switch or press a button, it sees it. Indigo obviously then tries to handle it... but with the sync failure situation, nothing happens. Might we consider that as implying some problem in the PLM firmware ?

As for the origin of the devices - I've bought all my insteon parts from AARTECH because Canada. Both the problematic 2413s are 'rev 2.5 1719'.

I'm baffled.

Since turning off the breakers didn't help and the 2414U works I think we can rule out a power line signal issue as the cause. That leaves us with either: 1) malfunctioning PowerLinc (multiple since you've tried more than one), 2) a USB problem, 3) the FTDI driver issue.

#1 is possible, but before you order yet another PowerLinc I'd suggest further trying to rule out #2 and #3. I know you've tried multiple USB ports, but have you tried USB hubs? Lastly, you can try the FTDI driver workaround issues to see if that helps. If you have access to another Mac then I'd suggest installing the Indigo trial (or temporarily deactivating your license and activating it on the other Mac) as that will help rule out a malfunctioning PowerLinc.

If none of that gets you anywhere then I'm at a loss except for it being another bad PowerLinc...

Replacing the Insteon with What? Zwave?

Dual band Insteon has been rock solid here. I'm very reluctant to switch away, especially since I have extra Insteon hardware... (Admitably older hardware, but...)

But if my HA was to go belly up, I'd have to re-evaluate, and decide how I want to go next...

Just for the hell of it I also tried with the bought-in-december 2413 again; same log issues with link failure, resending and even the 'possible power failure'. Which implies some sort of software issue rather than the unit failing. The annoying thing is that nothing ahs been intentionally changed around the house/insteon/mac setup in a long time.

I had a very similar issue, but it wasn't the PLM. It was due to a noisy power supply on a 3d printer. Solved it by using ferrite chokes (eg https://www.amazon.com/Jabinco-20pcs-Fe ... 449&sr=8-3).

It was a PITA to diagnose, until I realized that the HA died very time I turned on the 3d printer, and started working shortly *AFTER* I turned it off.

I realize you said that it played breaker roulette, but is there any other devices plugged into the same outlet or surge protector? Have you tried any other outlets in the house. Any devices get moved around the house?

In the same boat with you. I have 100 Insteon devices listed in Indigo (some are duplicates such as fan / light). They've been very reliable for 8 years - especially in some places that Z-wave has difficulty reaching, such as detached garage. That would be a co$tly project to replace.

Wondering what Matt / Jay / and others in this forum would recommend to install as Insteon devices fail and need to be replaced?

I'm in the same boat currently @ 94 Insteon devices in daily use.. So that's about $5K @ an average of $50 a module to replace.

So I'll be replacing my Insteon as it dies until you can no longer find replacments.. over 15 years i've lost about 5 modules total (Not counting the 3-4 PLM) most of those user error shorting the load.. :shock:

I have learned to have a spare PLM ready to go.

If I ever start from scratch I think it will be Lutron RA2. It's a lot of $$$$ but you get what you pay for.

An Update; and a strong case of WTF?

I took everything down. Turned off everyinthg (again). Thought about even starting with a fresh install and making a new file.

Did the reassembling and decided to re-try the "plug PLM into different outlet" with a longer extension and an outlet the other side of the house. Ah, it actually connected. Interesting. OK, has something magically fixed itself? Nope, same issue when plugged back in the same outlet that it has sat in for ten years. Try another couple of outlets, gradually getting closer to the server stuff.

One outlet in the office (wherein lived the server closet etc) makes it all very happy. The other one (guess which one I had tried before) doesn't. I only tried the OK outlet because the other had two things plugged in at the time.

After getting the sytem fully operational with the extension lead trailing across the floor I tried plugging back into the 'normal' one - no luck, it still refuses to communicate with any devices. This, by the way, is the outlet that the UPs and servers are plugged into, via a FilterLinc. The circuit has just this single outlet, all on its own breaker. The OK outlet in the office and the not-OK one are on a different circuit.

Somewhere, there is some magic thing affecting this circuit (which is all of 8ft of cable from the breaker) that has waited 10 years to attack. I guess now I have to work out which circuit the OK outlet sits on and try splicing an outlet in a convenient location.

There must, sruely, be some tool that I could use to track down the culprit more precisely. Do I really need to borrow an oscilloscope (not to mention someone that can twiddle the knobs in the right manner) to solve this?

And of course, I have to think of what to start replacing insteon stuff with. This level of annoyance really doesn't make me happy. Z-Wave? HomeKit stuff? Sonoff?

In the meantime, thank you for making suggestions and helping me stay (vaguely) sane) during the War Of The PLM.

We've received a lot of requests like this, both here on the forums and in support emails and support form requests. I've just created a new forum to discuss options for switching between technologies (not expressly concerning Insteon, but rather a more general place to discuss switching between technologies). Please read the rules for posting there before posting so we can keep that forum useful.
