Should Optimize crash the Indigo Server

Still having optimise problems but this is when a device cannot be found it just crashes and then removes loads of devices and hangs the Gen5 Stick

Re: Should Optimize crash the Indigo Server

I have inadvertently come precariously close to authoring a Crash the Indigo Server plugin from time to time, but other than that nothing 'should' crash the Indigo server.

That said, I have never had the Indigo server crash as a result of network optimization. If it were me, I would try rerunning the Indigo Installer to see if that fixes the problem you're seeing.

I came here to drink milk and kick ass....and I've just finished my milk.

Re: Should Optimize crash the Indigo Server

I did download and reinstall Indigo but had 3 more incidents overnight. Common factor was all the errors are related to the garage which is 20 feet from the nearest house device. These have worked fine for months but now the temperature is around zero centigrade I am suspecting that the garage devices now have a reduced range and so I have removed them from the system.
I still cannot understand why this causes the removal of all the other devices, is it a bad gen5 stick?

Re: Should Optimize crash the Indigo Server

I'd argue that this isn't a crash of the Indigo Server. A crash would mean the server immediately quits (and a crash report file is logged).

This looks like a hang of the Z-Wave controller (Z-Stick), that then causes Indigo to try to recover by restarting its communication (initialization handshake) over. That then fails because the Z-Stick is still out-to-lunch. The Z-Stick reports bogus module information to Indigo at this point, so Indigo decides something is very wrong and disables communication for the modules that are now reported with bad information (all of them?).

I'm not sure what is causing this behavior. It could be a module (like the garage ones), or it could be the Z-Stick is in a bad state. Resetting the Z-Stick (via the Interfaces->Z-Wave menu) might help, but that can be a painful process since you have to re-include all of your modules. I'd start though probably by removing (excluding) just the suspect modules, then re-including those to see if that helps the situation.

Re: Should Optimize crash the Indigo Server

CliveS,

I've had similar issues - check out http://forums.indigodomo.com/viewtopic.php?f=131&t=19826. At the moment I'm just living with it and over the Xmas break I might get around to digging a bit more into it and exclude/re-include all the affected devices. The most problematic device I have is a Fibaro Universal sensor so I've set up a schedule to run regularly to re-enable if it's disabled. I'll also do a double check whenever I'm syncing a new device or a re-sync - for me its not consistent, sometimes I'll have 5,6, 7 devices disabled and other times just the Fibaro. I'm leaning on Matt's side that it may be a dodging stick but not 100% convinced :|

Re: Should Optimize crash the Indigo Server

I think I have narrowed it down to distance as when I try to optimise the garage switches (3 of them) they do not see each other sometimes and other times only see 1 or 2 but never all 3 see each other (and sometimes they just screw up completely!!!).

Bring them in the house and they are see everything around them no problem.

The trouble is that when they do "fail" it screws the Gen5 stick and not even rebooting the Mac Mini from cold will reset it, only by removing it from the USB port and plugging it back in works so I can't test for and then re-enable as the z-wave is not enabled!

Why it randomly kills some but not all devices is most probably down to the stick killing the devices and when it locks it can't finish them all off.

The strange thing is only an Aeotec multi-sensor 4 in the living room running on USB power can see 1 of the garage switches, all the mains powered devices in the living room (4) can't see any.

Before I get a new Gen5 stick I will try putting z-wave powered switches on extension leads just outside the front door and the garage door and see if that will extend the range.

Re: Should Optimize crash the Indigo Server

Do you have any sense how many hops the commands must travel to get to the devices when they're placed in their permanent locations? There is a hop limit with Z-Wave.

Another thing to try -- which may or may not be a lot of work depending on the number of devices you have -- is to resync all your devices starting with the one closest to the Z-Stick and working your way out. Do battery-powered devices last. This might improve your situation by minimizing the number of hops to get to any one device.

Re: Should Optimize crash the Indigo Server

Not sure how to tell what is connected direct to the Z-stick and which go via a hop but I have now optimized the powered devices nearest the stick as you suggested, (does optimise and resync do the same for looking for neighbours?) and with a Fibaro dimmer module temporarily placed outside the garage door I have a much improved network in the garage, just need to wire it inside a wall light on the garage which is always live (has a Philips Hue bulb) and I should be sorted.
