iOS 7 icon test - just procrastinating

My head was trying to absorb too many new concepts yesterday so as I diversion I thought I'd try and redesign the Indigo Touch icon. I actually thought I could replace the icon inside the .ipa, i.e zip, app package and re-sync to the iPhone/iPad to see the icon on the home screen, but it doesn't work. I think it's something to do with the re-zipping, and I can't be bothered to figure out why or to install Xcode to see if that helps.

Nevertheless, I thought I'd post it here anyway - my, albeit still a bit rough, mockup of an iOS 7 inspired Indigo Touch icon.

Oooh nice.. alas i don't think it's possible to change icons on apps without jailbreaking.. but it'll be pretty cool when M&J release their new app and see what icon they've used.. :D And of course all the other cool stuff they add.. fingers crossed for some major control page enhancements (hint hint guys ;)

I actually thought you could by taking the .ipa file and replacing the extension with .zip. Then uncompress the file and access the package within to see all the icons used in the app. Then replace the icons, keeping the same file name, re-compress and finally change .zip back to .ipa.

But that failed. App loaded back onto the iPhone but icon doesn't show and app failed to launch. Pretty sure the re-zipping was the problem, but I could be wrong.

99% (if not 100%) it is the signing of the ipa file.

Once signed every change to the contents make that the app will not load.

The only one allowed to sign is... The developer :)

Yeah that's what i was thinking.. otherwise people could easily inject their own code/items/etc into iOS apps and the walled garden would be breached. I guess people would start writing viruses to modify .ipa files with all sorts of malicious intents.. and before you know it it's worse than fandroid!

That makes total sense.

We have a new icon designed by Mark Gervais (who designed the new graphics for Indigo 6) that'll be used for the upcoming Indigo Touch refresh. In fact, if you look up at the top of this page, you'll get a really good idea of what it looks like... :P

I looked a little TOO far up and noticed the site's favorite icon is the old one... just sayin'. :-)
