*ALL* Big HA Platform Players to Form a HA Standards WG

Apple, Amazon, Google, the Zigbee Alliance, Ikea, Legrande, SmartThings, Somfy, Schneider, Signify (formerly Philips), Silicon Labs, ...

All of the above companies are reportedly joining together to form a working group currently called Project Connected Home IP.

The short goal statement is "to develop and promote the adoption of a new, royalty-free connectivity standard to increase compatibility among smart home products, with security as a fundamental design tenet".

This could be interesting to watch. In theory it should help change the less-than-idea situation that has been evolving over the past few years where the only way to market HA gear to normal consumers was to pitch something like "alexa compatibility" or "works with HomeKit". In my view, this was causing highly inefficient and unsustainable market fragmentation, was discouraging consumers from buying-in due to the need to "pick a winner" (or at least a non-loser) out of a buzzword-laden field of competitors. In some cases, it was not leaving any room for systems like Indigo to play along and was also causing the true vendor-independent standards (like Z-wave) to get "lost in the noise" from a consumer standpoint, since they lacked backing from a deep-pockets platform player like Google or Amazon.

There are dozens of different press releases out there from all the involved players. This is the only definitive website i can find currently that's connected to the project and it provides for entering your email address to sign-up for more info.
