Neither of those options are possible.

Does the device present differently at random times, or does the user switch it? If the latter, then two different device types seems the more appropriate way rather than trying to have the device "adapt".

Thanks Jay,

I decided to use a custom (instead of relay) device and change the displayStateId using the getDeviceDisplayStateId method. It works fine. The only capability that I'm losing is the ability to use the built-in device turnOn/turnOff commands when in onOffState mode. Instead, I wrote turnOn/turnOff plugin actions for the custom device. Not quite as convenient, but it's OK.
