Device state changed vs On or Instant On within Python?

Hi,
Is there any way within in a Python (or AS) script to to get determine if an Insteon (Switchlinc) single or double tap (on or instant on) command was received without creating separate triggers? The device state changed trigger does something else but if I could script whether either of the ON commands were received I could execute the different action within that trigger. Can't seem to find a way to do it.
