Connection failed installing 2414U controller

I am attempting to reinstall Indigo on El Capitan after foolishly upgrading to High Sierra.

The 2414U controller is visible in System Information.

Now I am getting connection failed errors.

I have replaced the USB cable and it made no difference.

Someone suggested that there might be permission errors. Is this a possibility and if so where?

I am able to use Z-Wave devices They function correctly so I think Indigo 7 is OK.

Another suggestion was that there might be noise on the line. I've tried using an extension to several other outlets but I'm not 100% sure if it is on a different circuit.

Copy/paste the exact errors from the event log into a reply.

Re: Connection failed installing 2414U controller

I decided that trying to get Insteon to work was a waste of time. I have switched permanently to Z-Wave and moved back to my High Sierra desktop. I am happier with it because there is less of a delay after clicking on a device. I had to replace one switch to Z-Wave but I already had tested Z-Wave and had the adapters.

Re: Connection failed installing 2414U controller

A couple comments that may or may not be related.

Insteon Controller:
I have a 2413U controller that performed intermittently when plugged into one outlet (which also had a power strip with monitors, dock, etc. ) and when I plugged the 2413U into an adjacent outlet in the same room (same circuit, I think), it worked much better. Upshot: maybe plug into another outlet OR unplug potential noise sources and determine if you have a local "polluter" on the power line. My controller is plugged into the same outlet as my Mac, but the Mac is into a power strip that is behind a power filter.

Insteon and High Sierra:
Just today i (foolishly) upgraded to High Sierra, hoping to resolve some non home control issues. Of course the interfaces now have gone stupid, and both X10/Insteon and Z-Wave are not connecting. Per a separate thread, I do have a USB 2 hub and i plugged the Insteon controller into that, after which Indigo was able to connect and control lights.

Z-Wave:
I have tried the Z-Wave stick directly into the iMac and into the USB2 hub. No luck with either. Suggestions welcome! Reverting back to Sierra is not that attractive since I skipped Sierra from prior Mac OS>

Re: Connection failed installing 2414U controller

After I switched to using Z-wave, I realized that I needed to control a couple of X10 devices. So I am attempting install Indigo to interface the 2414U controller on another desktop (iMac mid 2007) - El Capitan. However, I still get connection errors but was able to install Indigo on my MacBook Air. I would prefer to get it operating on the iMac.

I suspect that the problem is due to El Capitan and the 2007 iMac's USB ports are showing as USB instead of USB 2. The Host Controller Driver is AppleUSBUHCIPCI instead of AppleUSBEHCIPCI (USB 2.0)

Does anyone know whether this might be the problem? Does anyone know if the 2414U works with USB or is the problem that the USB 2 ports have the wrong Host Controller Driver? I get the following error AppleUSBUHCIPort::resetAndCreateDevice: failed to start device

There are a number of tips that describe how to patch the USB ports so that they are defined work with El Capitan but I am not sure if I should try or leave Indigo on my Macbook.

Did you try all the suggestions on this post? In particular, restarting the Mac in rescue mode and then running Disk Utility on it?

The 2414U should work with El Capitan, although with every major macOS release there seem to be different variants of USB gremlins that strike very specific Mac models. The 2414U is different than the 2413U in that the 2414U is an HID device and requires the IndigoOverrides.kext to be installed. It is a codeless driver that prevents the Apple HID driver from grabbing control over the 2414U (since it isn't a keyboard or mouse) which then allows the Indigo Server open up a good connection to it later when it launches. So the problem might be you don't have the Indigo driver installed.

We actually removed the 2414U driver from the most recent Indigo installer (7.1) because it was causing installation problems on some newer versions of macOS. But you can you download the old Indigo 6.1 installer here and use it to install the driver. When launching the installer press the button to customize the install then uncheck everything except the Indigo driver – no need to install the client, server, etc. When it is done restart your Mac and see if Indigo can connect to it. If it cannot then copy/paste the Event Log window results so we can see what specific errors are being reported.

Re: Connection failed installing 2414U controller

Wonderful. That worked and now I can use Screen Sharing on my main computer to control the remaining X10 outlets.
Many thanks.

Re: Connection failed installing 2414U controller

I'm having this problem as well in Indigo 7.4 / Catalina (10.15)

I get a pop-up dialog

Failed to establish connection with interface

Make sure you have run the complete Indigo installer included in the download (or CD-ROM) and that the correct interface settings are chosen in the Preferences dialog.

The hardware shows up in my system report, but my Indigo 7.4 cannot context to my 2414U.

Help?

Have you tried different USB ports, including ports in USB hubs? Also after running the Indigo 6 driver installer did you do step #5 mentioned in my next post below?

The PowerLinc 2414U uses a different driver, which is not included by macOS (unlike the newer PowerLinc 2413U which uses a driver Apple includes).

The most recent version of Indigo installer doesn't include the drivers for the PowerLinc 2414U (or CM15) since they were discontinued years ago and aren't compatible with newer Insteon modules. However, you can use an older Indigo installer to get the driver which you can download here.

To launch the installer you may need to right-click the Indigo Installer.pkg file (instead of double-clicking it) and select Open from the contextual menu, and then click the Open button in the resulting dialog. If you receive a certificate expired message ignore it (it is an old installer) and then:

1) Progress to the 3rd install screen then press the Customize button.
2) Deselect all items in the table except for Indigo Drivers item (you only want to install the drivers).
3) Proceed with the Install.
4) Restart your Mac.
5) You may have to go into the System Preferences -> Security panel to approve the driver, then restart again.
