First Impressions

I'm soliciting first impressions on using Prism.

Anyone care to share their initial experience of trying it out -- was it easy to setup and activate? is it working for you? suggestions / comments?

There are some additional features planned for Prism, but the initial goal is to provide easy and configuration-free access to your home. Please share your thoughts.

Regards,
Matt

My first impressions is that it works. So far It has done exactly what my DYDNS direct access does. Configuration was easy too.

I've been using it for about a month, or close to it. I believe I posted in another thread about a problem of it not working after a couple of weeks. Restarting the IndigoServer I believe is what you said to do to fix it. Been running fine since then.

Was easy to set up because I had no idea what I was doing at the time, yet it still worked.

I started off with nothing...I still have most of it left.

I had no idea what I was doing and I was able to get it to work! Thanks!

Like everyone else, I found it really simple to set up and although it's early days, it appears to be doing precisely what it's supposed to.

Set up was easy, as advertized. I was able to readily able to connect with both my Palm Treo 700p and from my Mac at work (behind a large corporate firewall).

However, I mistakenly connected from work using http:// instead of https:// and got through with no problem.

Does this mean that the Prism reflector does not require a secure connection, and will serve the information without encryption? This also made me think, all I needed, even with https:// is the address for my reflection to get in, with no additional security (login, etc.). Anyone who can guess (or capture if I forget to use https) can see and control my Indigo server??

Am I missing something?

Jim

Hi Jim - glad everything worked well for you on setup.

Regarding HTTP access, currently both HTTP and HTTPS are provided - as some devices or browsers that users may use don't handle HTTPS. So you are free to connect through either protocol.

In the future, for general security, we may disable HTTP access and only allow HTTPS.

As for logging into your actual Prism Reflector. When you activated your Reflector in Indigo, it probably warned you that you should turn on security access to your server. This is configured in Indigo for your computer. Prism doesn't require you to protect your system.

However, it's assumed that you probably want to turn access control on, unless you like random people (or friends/family) playing tricks on you.

To turn it on, go to "Indigo 2" in the menu bar, and choose "Start Local Server". In the dialog box that comes up, turn on "Require authentication" and you should now be set.

Andrew,

Thanks for clearing that up. I looked again at the Start Local Server and noticed (as you said) that I can require a login. This is certainly better and works fine.

BTW, should the "Connect to Remote Server" option work through the Prism reflector, or just the web access? It is enabled, and works on my local network, but does not seem to work through Prism?

I assume you're referring to the Widget? No, the widget does not currently connect through Prism - though this is something that may be supported in the future.

Thanks for the feedback - and feel free to ask any more questions or feature requests.

Hi Jim,

As Andy mentioned the Widget cannot connect through Prism currently, and neither can the native Mac Cocoa Indigo client. The Prism reflectors currently only work for the web browser access.

Which situation are you referring to? The fact that only the Indigo web server is currently available via Prism?

Matt
