Re: INSTEON Thermostats

I've attached 3 pics from the thermostat manual to clarify this. There are 4 modes-- 5 if you count "off"
Off
Heat (1 set point)
Cool (1 set point)
Auto (1 heat and 1 cool set point ) indigo reports this as "auto mode"
Time of Day mode (1 heat and 1 cool set point for each of 4 time of day settings for when you wake/leave/return/sleep). When this mode is active, indigo reports it as "program auto mode")

My problem is that if you use a control page to modify the mode, it only cycles between off/heat/cool/auto mode. It does not address the last mode, time of day mode (or program auto whatever you want to call it). Additionally the indigo commands to set the mode directly to this mode do not seem to exist. This is my 'go to' mode that the thermostat runs in 95% of the time for me, the one I need to get back into after making a manual remote adjustment from a control page.

I need to be able to set to this mode remotely or via indigo commands as it serves as a redundant failsafe so my thermostat will know how I want the house temps set should indigo not be able to communicate with it at some point.

Additionally the thermostat has an "energy" button that moves the set points by 6 degrees when pressed and it would be nice to have this feature available from indigo as well.

Thank you for the quick replies by the way. Hope this clarifies my request.

Re: INSTEON Thermostats

The Venstar thermostats with the INSTEON adaptors are what those actions are based on. I believe that the INSTEON thermostat itself only uses one of those to put it into program mode. Have you tried each of the 3 run program actions to see if any of them puts the thermostat back into it's Time of Day mode? I believe one of them does but I don't recall which.

The Cycle Through Thermostat Modes command currently does not cycle through the Program modes. It just goes through OFF, COOL, HEAT, and AUTO. We'll add to our feature request list to add the option to also cycle through PROGRAM.

That isn't correct. Did you follow Jay's previous instructions:
jay (support) wrote:
The Set Main Mode thermostat control action (Device Actions->Thermostat Controls->Set Main Mode) allows you to set the thermostat mode to Run Heat Program, Run Cool Program, and Run Auto Heat/Cool Program. Those correspond to the program modes that you set at the thermostat itself. Execute an action that sets it to those modes and the thermostat's program takes over.

Specifically, did you try adding a Control Page control that executes the Set Main Mode action with the Mode type set to Run Auto Heat/Cool Program? I know that action works with the Venstar thermostat and INSTEON adapter and I believe it should also work with the INSTEON thermostat.

Re: INSTEON Thermostats

Ok, thanks for the clarification to get this working. Setting the mode via Set Main Mode works, but not quite as expected. The only way to get into that time of Day Program Mode is to "Run Heat Program", which will be kind of confusing for the other part of the year, when the AC needs to run, but thats OK. Setting to Run Auto/Heat Cool program works as expected, putting you into the non-program heat/cool mode. Setting Run Cool program did nothing for me. I tried tapping the button, starting in each of the modes available on the thermostat. Would still be nice to have the Mode Cycle working and the Energy Button control in a future release.

Thanks for helping me resolve this.

That sounds familiar now. Unfortunately, I believe Smarthome wasn't consistent in their implementation of the Program Mode commands from their Venstar INSTEON adapter to their thermostat.

Re: INSTEON Thermostats

My three (3) Venstar T1800's suddenly became extremely chatting. Informing me of temperature changes in the log at no apparent interval. I am running Indigo Server 6.0.11, the thermostats are about three (3) years old, with the latest firmware at that time.

The only changes in my Insteon network were the addition of five (5) SwitchLinc 24766D's. The problem, per the logs, appears to have started after configuring the switches.

Polling on each Thermostat is set to seven (7) minutes. I have toggled that off with no change in behavior. I am using a tweaked version of the "Venstar Thermostat Usage Monitor" which I adapted for three (3) thermostats but that scripting has been in place for awhile and would not cause this behavior.

The problem is cosmetic, is new behavior and the message from the Thermostats saying the temperature has changed have little value.

Any thoughts on the cause or how to stop it?

Re: INSTEON Thermostats

I suspect at some point you re-sync'd the Venstars and Indigo wrote the links into them so that they now broadcast out temperature changes. This was a featured added quite a while back and means you no longer need to poll out the temperature or mode from the thermostats.

The downside, as you have noticed, is that it adds entries to the Event Log. There is no workaround for that currently, although we have on our feature request list to improve the control and viewing of the Event Log.

Re: INSTEON Thermostats

Matt or Jay,
This one is a head scratcher.
My Insteon T1800 has been working like a champ for a couple of years, no problem. We returned home Saturday night from dinner to find that none of the light schedules had executed. I pulled up the log to check it out and it was filled with Venstar status reports; basically, the thermostat was clobbering the Insteon network with noise. I turned the power off, then on and the noise stopped.
Just had another issue and pulled up the log and found the same thing; the log is full of this:

It just goes and goes. I reset the power again, and it has stopped (again). There doesn't seem to be any regular periodicity - so I don't think any plugins, etc., are polling the thermostat. It seems to be just broadcasting.

Does this mean my thermostat is going bad?

Best,
Phil

Re: INSTEON Thermostats

I'd try to factory reset the adaptor and see if that helps.

Re: INSTEON Thermostats

Jay,
I factory reset the thermostat and I haven't had the same problem. The thermostat is acting funny at the physical panel, but the Insteon issue seems to have gone away.
Do I understand it correctly that Nest has added INSTEON capability?
Best,
Phil

Re: INSTEON Thermostats- Remote Temp Sensor Reading

I've searched this thread but couldn't spot this - maybe it's obvious so apologies in advance - I've got an Insteon Wireless Tstat with the remote sensor wired up - Can I get the remote temp reading to Insteon? It's the only i'm interested in. I've slipped the sensor into the hot tub so I can get warnings if there's a temp drop in the winter when I'm not at home. If anyone has another suggestion on how to do this I'd appreciate it.

Re: INSTEON Thermostats

Unfortunately the external sensor's temperature value is not available via INSTEON commands.

Input from Insteon Waterproof Temperature Sensor (2433

Guys -- Is there any way to get the input from the external waterproof temperature sensor that can be connected to the Insteon Wireless Thermostat? I want to use it to monitor the temperature of an outdoor grill so as to ensure that it doesn't stay lit all night. I would be happy to create a new device type to support this as a new plug-in but it would help to have access to the original device definition so that I may extend it.

Thanks

Re: INSTEON Thermostats

I'm afraid that isn't possible – the external sensors are not available to my knowledge via INSTEON commands.

I'd recommend the RFXrec433 receiver for getting external temperature sensor data into Indigo.

Re: INSTEON Thermostats

This is an old problem and I have the question posed on another thread in another section of the board, but this topic/thread seems more appropriate and perhaps others will see it and chime in similar experience and/or fixes. I have an Insteon thermostat 2441th as well as a Ventstar, The Venstar works fine. The 2441th periodically switches into "energy mode", and occasionally from heat to cool mode, when the heat ignitor lights on my Renzor HVAC. This is the third winter this issue has popped up and it is very frustrating (not an issue with AC). As a temporary fix, I have set the stepping change for energy mode at 1 degree so the impact is minimal, and I have a trigger to pick up my HVAC going into "cool" during the winter (and Indigo puts HVA back into heat).

I have spoken to Smarthome about the issue many times and they keep offering me replacement 244th units (I am about to install the 5th one next week), but it does not help the problem, I have found over 15 people reporting similar problems on various internet sites, but most have fixed by replacing their 2441 with other a z-wave or Venstar model. I like the look of the 2441th so prefer not to go that way. I have tried (1) putting in a separate 24VAC transformer to power the 244th; and (2) installing a surge protector on the 5 wires going to the 2441th to try to filter out interference. It did not solve the "energy mode" issue however (may have solved the HVAC to cool problem, but need to monitor the situation longer as this only occurs about one/week anyway). Among the difficulties monitoring, the problem is initiated when the heater's furnace kicks in. Depending on how cold it is outside, the frequency of heater ignitions varies. I believe my heater only turns on 1-3/times per day right now so hard to know if my fix has mitigated the problem or not. The link on this board gives some additional color or other's similar experiences (http://forum.universal-devices.com/topi ... sue/page-6). Post 91 most interesting because a user reports success at fixing.

This is not an Indigo problem. It is a 244th hardware issue. Smart home is aware of it as they have gotten reports and issued replacements for many users, but they neither admit it nor are able to duplicate it. The problem seems to be specific to certain HVAC systems, and units by Rheem and Renzor. It is very frustrating to see Smarthome's lack of desire to correct the problem. The 2441th is responding to some signal, whether power line or RF, but it has not been identified, and it is not something detectable by instead commands.

Any thoughts?
