2413U first impressions

Folks,

Anyone else testing the 2413U?

I have two major misfit Togglelinc's... One is the hallway light, and the other is the garage #1 lamp...

The hallway light seems to be significantly better, but the garage lamp seems to be significantly worse than compared to the 2412U...

Anyone else have any comments regarding the 2412U?

- Ben

2413U first impressions

Mine can't hear incoming INSTEON commands. That's the way it seems. It sends INSTEON and X10 just fine. It hears X10 just fine but doesn't seem to hear INSTEON.

The 2413U replaced a 2414U with Indigo. Indigo did a wonderful job of updating all the links...I think.

I am continuing to troubleshoot.

Update: A "Define and Sync" of each INSTEON device fixes my problem.

I compared the 2413U and 2412S using my insteon_health.pl script. This was only ten iterations each, but the measurements are about within the margin of error for test repeatability. So there's not much difference in my tests.

I tested in two different outlets. The first is one that I had already established was marginal and the second was in my best outlet in the house. So neither does any better on a poor outlet, and neither does any worse on the good outlet.

It is very important to note that although I have put some access points in my house, I have also bridged my phases with Signalincs (in each of my two main panels and also between the panels). So any advantage the 2413U may have in terms of a more direct path to the APs would not show up here.

Unfortunately I have no way to compare either of the PLMs to the 2414U, which is what I'm using with Indigo now. Next I'm going to switch Indigo to the 2413U and see how that goes.

Its been about a week since installing the 2413 and I've started having a problem with X10 events. The PLM has essentially become deaf to X10 signals. It still works fine on Insteon and sending X10. I guess it will be getting RMA's next week. If I can't resolve the problem. Resets and plug/unplug didn't work. Next step is a factory reset.

Update on my 2413U after living with it for a while:

No problems so far. It is way faster than the 2414, although I was careful to minimize back-to-back insteon commands so this was never a major annoyance for me to begin with.

Aside from that everything is just as reliable as before so I'm a happy camper. As I mentioned earlier I am not dependent on APs for bridging, and I also have no RF devices that I use on a regular basis. So the benefit of the built-in RF is negligible for me. If your system can benefit from a faster path to the RF medium then you may see additional benefits.

So based on my anecdote:

- recommended upgrade for 2414U users
- might benefit some 2412U users

Thanks Sean, that's exactly the kind of summary I was searching for. I have the 2414U with no major issues (every once in a while it does not hear one KPL button to play/pause iTunes, but I'm not even positive that is an Insteon problem).

So if I upgrade, I can expect

1. Similar reliability
2. Faster speed
3. Possible lowering of hops due to the dual band nature

Would you all say that is correct? I'm on a pure Insteon PL setup, with X10 wireless handled by a W800rf32.

EDIT: Well, of course you'd say that, I basically re-wrote your post. :+D I mean, people other than Sean, would you say that is correct?

Thanks.
Brian

Yes. And don't forget that the 2412/2413 does extended INSTEON commands (the 2414 doesn't) - which will become increasingly required as SmartLabs implements new functions in devices using extended commands.

Re: 2413U first impressions

I was having all sorts of problems with a 2412. With the help of seanadams' indispensable script (big thanks and also to berkinet) I was able to get reasonable performance.
Code: Select all
Success rate:              2316 / 2400  96.5%
Good, bad, total devices:  18, 6, 24            (good means >=95% reachable)
Average RTT:               0.469

I decided to try the 2413, I'd say the reliability is improved
Code: Select all
Success rate:              2398 / 2400  99.9%
Good, bad, total devices:  24, 0, 24            (good means >=95% reachable)
Average RTT:               0.235
