Smart Mirror
Re: Smart Mirror
Monitor is a 19” widescreen, doesn’t quite fill the frame. There’s two approaches people seem to take either a monitor that completely fills the frame or having a monitor just as a section of the mirror.
Back picture below, it shows a pi3 in there at the moment as I was playing with some of the more processor intense plugins that tbh don’t add much so the pi0 will be going back there shortly.
There’s a good forum at the magicmirror site.
Another tip I’ve had is to use laptop screens and buy a hdmi driver and psu for it.
This would get you a 15.6” screen for around £30 and the hdmi driver for around £25
Bit more expensive and smaller but much less challenge mounting and holding the weight in the frame.
My next one is a 22” monitor which has vesa mount on the metal body itself so I will mount the monitor then build a frame around it which saves the frame having to take the weight of the monitor

Re: Smart Mirror
I have to say, that's one of the coolest hacks I've seen in a long time. Well done!

I’m about to do this, and I’m so glad tonsee a fellow Indigo’er with excellent results.
I plan to do one for or kitchen. I am presently torn between a RaspberryPi running it, or and old MacBook that AirPlay Mirrors to an old AppleTV running it. The AppleTV option allows for all the streaming features.

Re: Smart Mirror
What about doing both?
The big appeal of the pi for me is the fact that it just works and will be always on.
If you use a monitor with two inputs you could then simply switch inputs on the occasions when you want so more than the mirror bug the rest of the time it just works as the mirror should
Keep us posted, might encourage me to crack on with my next one for my office!

Re: Smart Mirror
So 14 months later, undeterred, I continue to plan to do this! I finally kludged a way on a Raspi to run a Chromium window with Indigo in it, with associated actions to open new tabs for new Indigo pages. Now i just need to slap this guy on a cheap monitor and get a 2-way mirror!

Nice implementation, but any smart mirror of mine is not going to include a microphone or a camera.tazswe wrote:For those that ain’t smart enough to build their own.

I hear that- no microphone on mine, but a camera and self-hosted facial recognition.DaveL17 wrote:Nice implementation, but any smart mirror of mine is not going to include a microphone or a camera.tazswe wrote:For those that ain’t smart enough to build their own.

No joke- homebrew deep learning is low hanging fruit. I gave a presentation on the topic at Columbia, and trained a neural network (in the last 5 minutes) to ID their faculty from videos they have on YouTube.
But, I still haven’t made a plugin, soooooo...
