Airfoil, Speech, and Mac OS X 10.9 and later

In Mac OS X 10.9 (Mavericks) and later, Apple changed how text to speech is performed. It's no longer actually performed by the calling application (in our case, IndigoServer.app), but is now performed by a separate process (com.apple.speech.speechsysthesisd). To direct speech output, you must select this as the application source. However, it doesn't show up by default, so follow this procedure:

  1. In Indigo, have it speak some text. It doesn't matter what or how, just having some speech will cause the hidden process that actually speaks to launch.
  2. Switch to Airfoil
  3. Hold down the Option key and select the application source menu at the top of the Airfoil window
  4. You'll see a huge list of every process that's running on your Mac - search and select the "com.apple.speech.speechsysthesisd" item

That's it. Airfoil will now direct all speech to whatever speakers you have selected. In Indigo, you should see that in the Application sources menu when you do a Change Audio Source action.
