separate "speak" field for an overall list of actions

Hiya!

I'd like to put on the request list the addition of a "speak..." action field for an overall list of actions that can be used to speak an announcement when it doesn't make sense to attach an announcement to a specific item in a list of actions.

Alternately, perhaps "speak message" or "play sound" could become a notification action (in addition to "send email" that seems to be the only notification action available now) one could add to a list apart from other actions?

You could just add an additional action of type 'No Action' and fill in the speak field of the action to achieve something similar to what you want.

Very true. Good point. As for long lists "reading" easily, it feels a little hacky ("whenever you see 'no action', it actually does something...so don't stop and double click it to see if it really does nothing because it does something...unless it actually does nothing...then...um..." ?!?), so I'll still make the suggestion that a few more "notification actions" would be worth building to accompany the lonely "send email" action, and could even be expanded out to other "pre built actions" as notifications, like "flash <device> < number > of times" or even support special devices like the new Insteon Siren with it's built in "chime" like a door bell or blare like an alarm horn and such.

Correct. It's really just legacy that it's where it is now, but non-trivial to change so it doesn't feel like it's worth the effort.

We have to be careful about what goes into Notification actions. Speak might be an acceptable one to go there, but beeping/sirens etc. are really less standalone actions and are more tied to the device that performs the action - so they're more appropriate as device actions. Sending email, growl notifications, etc, are not dependent on a specific device, so this is where those go.
