I have a need to be able to change the external link redirect of a control page button on the fly, is that possible ?

Maybe just execute an Action containing a script with the conditions then redirects.

That's the right idea, I just don't know how to change the re-direct in a script…

Set external link of button_number of page_name to "URL://"

This is not actually possible currently in the way that you are wanting to do it -- no actions will change a control page link and the server cannot redirect from the back end to a client. If there are a limited number of options to which you may want to redirect, it IS possible to do with a bit of image heuristics trickery; but it isn't very scalable or pretty. If you are looking for a completely free-form generation of URL (i.e. not a distinct list of say 4-5 possible URLs) then I don't know of any good workaround.
