How to monitor propane grill?

Mea culpa. I left the grill on. For several days.

What kind of sensor would work to detect that the grill stays hot too long? It's in a covered summer kitchen (lanai) so it's outside but not really exposed.

I also need to put a monitor on the underground propane tank. There was a thread about that on the boards somewhere. Need to find it.

Re: How to monitor propane grill?

I'd weigh the tank using a load cell and use a thermocouple for sensing the heat. An Arduino could get the data back to Indigo.

It's a 500gal underground tank. I did say it ran for several days before it noticed it was left on....

The thermocouple would work, I guess. I was hoping for possibly a Z-wave sensor so I don't need to add lots of new devices to maintain.

Re: How to monitor propane grill?

You could go the cheap route and put in an inexpensive temperature monitor under the grill, even from a foot away it should be substantially warmer than the ambient temperature.

My Modest Contributions to Indigo:

HomeKit Bridge | Device Extensions | Security Manager | LCD Creator | Room-O-Matic | Smart Dimmer | Scene Toggle | Powermiser | Homebridge Buddy

Yeah, that was sort of what I was thinking. Any specific units you think would work? I don't currently have any temperature sensors at all, except for the Ecobee sensors.

What about an RFXCOM with a temp monitor close by?

Pretty pricey just to get one temp sensor. I could put a Z-wave multi-sensor under the grill for a lot less. But I don't need motion, light, humidity, etc.

Those are probably the least expensive of the prebuilt types.

But not if you already HAVE the RFX watching the refrigerator and freezer temperatures as I do... plus half a dozen other temp sensors scattered around the house, although those aren't anywhere near as critical as knowing before several hundred dollars of frozen food is about to thaw...
