Is there a way to do a widget that shows a variable not using a control page on an Android phone?
Not at the moment... the issue with widgets that show variables and/or device states is with updating them -- it could be a serious drain on resources and Doze would want to keep it from running in the background if possible anyway. While doable, the user experience would fall far short of what you would expect.
