PowerLinc 2414U & 64 bit

I just wanted people to know that if you are planning on using Indigo (version 4.11) with Snow Leopard Server ... DON'T; at least not yet until Matt and Jay can fix the issue.

It seems that the 64bit is "messing up" the connection/communication of the PowerLinc. I keep getting a connection error on the USB PowerLinc 2414U.

My Test: I have a few hard drives installed: one of them has Snow Leopard OS and the other has Snow Leopard Server OS. When I boot the Snow Leopard OS Indigo & the PowerLinc work just fine. When I boot off of the SL Server OS, I get the connection error.

Is anyone else having this issue?

Matt/Jay: Have you run into this issue? Have you had a chance to test the 64 bit yet?

Not yet, but do me a favor and download this update to Indigo's PowerLinc / CM15 driver. Open the DMG and copy the IndigoOverrides.kext file into this folder:
Code: Select all
/System/Library/Extensions/

Once it is copied over, make sure the permissions look like this:
Code: Select all
drwxr-xr-x    3 root  wheel   102 Jun  3  2007 IndigoOverrides.kext

Then reboot the machine and see if that helps. Let me know if it does and I'll include the updated driver file in the next 4.1.x installer.

Matt,

No dice. The IndigoOverrides.kext didn't work. I got the same results.

Bummer. I'll look into this, but it'll probably be a while before I have a solution.

I'm not sure what is going wrong. Jay just booted in 64-bit kernel mode (6 + 4 keys held down), and the new driver file worked fine. The old driver file worked as well. We don't have OS X Server, so testing that isn't possible right now.

When it fails, is there anything interesting logged in Indigo's Event Log or in the Console?

OK, try this - in a terminal window, type:

Code: Select all
sudo kextload -v /System/Library/Extensions/IndigoOverrides.kext

Make sure you're using the new kext Matt directed you to.

I installed server and reproduced the failure - issuing this command seems to force the kext to load and allow Indigo to talk to the Powerlinc. We still don't know the root cause, but it appears that the server isn't loading the kext correctly at boot, but forcing it to load manually works. This doesn't appear to be a 64-bit bug per se since it works correctly on non-server 64-bit client systems.

This isn't the first time we've had to work around a difference between client and server versions of Mac OS X...

I'm having the same problem

I've got a Mac Pro running 10.6.2 with 16GB RAM and VMWare Fusion. I have a Powerlinc 2414U USB controller which I know worked with HouseLinc on Windows so I'm 99% sure that a broken controller isn't the issue. I've also used two different USB cables and removed the virtual USB controller from the VMWare virtual machines.

I installed Indigo 4.11 this afternoon and upgraded to 4.13. I set up the Interface for the controller and clicked Connect. This is what I get in the Event log:

Connected to SmartHome PowerLinc USB E
PowerLinc address 08.B4.3F, firmware version 2.13
Error resending previous command (timeout)

A little popup appears a few seconds after this begins saying that it's installing IndigoApp but this apparently isn't working either.

I have no Insteon or X10 devices defined yet.

A couple of questions:

1) Did you reboot after you installed the upgrade to 4.1.3?
2) You mention 64bit - are you booting Snow Leopard into 64bit mode or running Snow Leopard Server?
3) When you look in System Profiler, what shows up there with regards to the 2414?
4) What exactly is the wording when you say "A little popup appears a few seconds after this begins saying that it's installing IndigoApp"?
5) Have you tried any of this with VMWare turned off?
6) Is the 2414 plugged into the same outlet it was plugged into when it worked under windows?

Yes.

This is my first Mac I have to confess that I'm a complete neophyte with Macs and OSX (I'm a Unix/Linux guy). It's the default boot, which is apparently 32 bit:

% uname -a
Darwin XXXXX-XXXXX-Mac-Pro.local 10.2.0 Darwin Kernel Version 10.2.0: Tue Nov 3 23:08:29 PST 2009; root:xnu-1486.2.11~3/RELEASE_I386 i386

I would have assumed that this box would default to 64bit. Guess not. Is that important?

3) When you look in System Profiler, what shows up there with regards to the 2414?

SmartHome PowerLinc USB E:

Product ID: 0x0004
Vendor ID: 0x10bf
Version: 4.00
Speed: Up to 1.5 Mb/sec
Manufacturer: SmartHome
Location ID: 0x1a200000
Current Available (mA): 500
Current Required (mA): 500

4) What exactly is the wording when you say "A little popup appears a few seconds after this begins saying that it's installing IndigoApp"?

Writing IndigoApp program to Powerlinc interface. This will take a couple of minutes, but only needs to be written once.

After a bunch of red error messages about "failure response" and "timeout", the program gives up with another popup which says

Failed to establish connection with interface.
Make sure you have run the complete Indigo installer included in the download (or CD-ROM) and that the correct interface settings are chosen in the Preferences dialog
.

5) Have you tried any of this with VMWare turned off?

Yes. No difference.

6) Is the 2414 plugged into the same outlet it was plugged into when it worked under windows?

Yes, but would that matter? It seems like the problem is that Indigo can't talk to the controller over the USB.

Try plugging the 2414U into a different outlet. Because we are just troubleshooting, use an extension cord if you need to. Also unplug all UPSs you have and let them just run off of battery while you test.

This is an important test because the 2414U can get confused by power line noise, and when it gets confused enough it fails to respond to any of Indigo's commands and you get the exact timeouts you are seeing in the Event Log.

I've got a long USB cable so I tried it on three different household AC circuits (not just different outlets). No diff.

Try unplugging all other USB devices besides your keyboard, mouse, and the 2414.

I don't have any other USB devices. The keyboard and mouse are Bluetooth as well.

Are there any tests I can do to isolate where the problem is?

Nothing that you haven't already tried. Given what you've done, there are 2 possibilities:

1) Signal noise is causing your PowerLinc to get confused and it won't respond to Indigo. Check out the signal troubleshooting page for common causes and solutions to signal issues. If you have UPSs, unplug them (let them run on battery) and see if that helps - they are a major cause of line noise.
2) Your PowerLinc is going bad.

The last thing you could try is starting up a VMware instance and seeing if HouseLinc is still able to communicate with it - my guess is that it won't.

Same issue on Mac Pro

I am having an identical problem on my Mac Pro running OS X 10.6.3 with a Powerlinc 2414U. The Hardware revision is 1.6 and it appears to be running firmware 2.12.

The logs vary a bit, but they generally look like this when I connect the Powerlinc module:

Code: Select all
PowerLinc address 01.83.8F, firmware version 2.12
  Error              resending previous command (timeout)
PowerLinc          Internal PowerLinc (IndigoApp) application mismatch
PowerLinc          Uploading internal PowerLinc application (IndigoApp)...
  Error              resending previous command (timeout)
Error              resending previous command (failure response)
Error              resending previous command (failure response)
Error              unknown command bytes received 15 15 (ignoring)
Error              resending previous command (unexpected command)
  Error              resending previous command (timeout)
Error              resending previous command (failure response)
Error              resending previous command (failure response)
Error              resending previous command (failure response)
Error              resending previous command (failure response)
Error              unknown command bytes received 15 15 (ignoring)
Error              resending previous command (unexpected command)
Error              resending previous command (failure response)
Error              failed to establish connection with main interface

Here is another one:

Code: Select all
Connected to SmartHome PowerLinc USB E
PowerLinc address 01.83.8F, firmware version 2.12
PowerLinc          Internal PowerLinc (IndigoApp) application mismatch
PowerLinc          Uploading internal PowerLinc application (IndigoApp)...
Error              resending previous command (failure response)
Error              resending previous command (failure response)
Error              resending previous command (failure response)
Error              resending previous command (failure response)
  Error              resending previous command (timeout)
  Error              resending previous command (timeout)
  Error              resending previous command (timeout)
  Error              resending previous command (timeout)
  Error              resending previous command (timeout)
  Error              resending previous command (timeout)
  Error              resending previous command (timeout)
Error              failed to unlock access to salad app region
Error              resending previous command (failure response)
Error              resending previous command (failure response)
Error              resending previous command (failure response)
Error              resending previous command (failure response)
Error              resending previous command (failure response)
Error              failed to establish connection with main interface

I have tried making sure the module is the only USB device connected to the machine. I've tried the module in several outlets (including using an extension cord to get to a far away outlet). I also tried using a brand new USB cable as well. Is this just a bad module? It seems too coincidental that the previous poster also had the issue on a Mac Pro.
