"Failed to establish a link with the device."

I just purchased a 2414U and am trying the trial of Indigo 4.0.2.

I'm running a uni-body MacBook Pro on Leopard 10.5.7. (I've also tried this on my wife's new iMac)
I haven't been able to successfully setup a single device using Indigo and the 2414U. I'm trying to control some LampLincs. I also have 20-some SwitchLinc Dimmers.

Indigo successfully connects to the 2414U but when i try to add a device, it doesn't auto-sense the address of the device when I hold the set button or paddle-top. So I manually enter the address and click Start. It tries 10 times to connect and then I get the error: "Failed to establish a link with the device."
I see this in the log 10 times before it gives up:

PowerLinc Linking - sending id request for device information
PowerLinc IndigoApp Running
PowerLinc IndigoApp Initialized

And when the linc is being attempted I see the blue LED on the PowerLinc blinking and flashing and I even see the LED on the LampLinc sometimes blink in response.

I have the PowerLinc plugged directly into the wall. The lamplinc is plugged directly into the pass-through port on the PowerLinc. The provided USB cable is plugged directly into a usb port on the laptop.

2414U firmware: 2.13
I've tried 4 or 5 different LampLincs & SwitchLincs. I've tried 4 or 5 different outlets in the house.

For testing purposes I was ablet to get the PowerLinc to control some devices using Shion for Mac as well as mControl for PC. (note: I saw no indication that those pieces of software were receiving any signals FROM the devices)

In the interest of full disclosure, I do NOT have any wireless Access Points installed in my Insteon system. So far, the system has worked quite well without them. I'd be surprised if that's the cause of this problem. But you guys know better than me.

Thanks.
-Andrew

If you're seeing the last two every time then there's definitely something wrong. Select "Choose Interface / Serial Port..." from the "Interface" menu, click the "Interface Options..." button, then select "Upload Internal Application and Reset".

I think between the extra log lines and the "sometimes" part of this statement we've got some clues. Hopefully it's just the reset that's necessary.

Re: "Failed to establish a link with the device."

Thank you,
I just tried that. The upload worked but it didn't change my results.

And let me clarify the "sometimes" in the last post. The LED on the LampLinc will reliably respond to the LED on the PowerLinc. It will just blink fewer times. And note that the LED on this LampLinc will respond in this way, even if I've entered a code for a different device and not the LampLinc. Here's a link to a video that demonstrates this:
http://www.andrewrozendal.com/videos/in ... eo0024.mov
The unit on the left in the video is the PowerLinc and on the right is a LampLinc. Normally I would have the LampLinc plugged into the PowerLinc and not the other way around.

I'm assuming I must have bought a bad PowerLinc.

And here's a section from the logs.

Sure looks like it - that error means that the PowerLinc is resetting itself after each time Indigo is asking it to send the link commands. This could also explain why you're never seeing any traffic from other devices. If you bought it from Smarthome, when you return it be sure to ask for one that works with Indigo - they have some that have a battery problem that keeps it from working in standalone mode correctly.

New PowerLinc Solved the Problem

Thank you,
They sent out a new one. It arrived in 1 day! And so far it's working nicely.

I just received my 2414U from smarthome, and I have the exact same problem. I am going to contact them today about replacing it. Is this 'IndigoApp Initialized' every time it tries to link a symptom of the bad battery or is this a new problem?

The symptom isn't exactly the same in that one can have the bad clock battery problem and not see those error messages (instead uploading just fails). But maybe they are related. I'm not sure.

Indigo 6.0.7
INSTEON OutletLinc 2473SWH v4.8

Out of 6 outlets, I have been only able to get 1 working in Indigo.

I never had this many issues with X10 outlets. They are just loud and can go bad over time.

Suggestions?

Re: "Failed to establish a link with the device."

That normally indicates some kind of signal issue. You might try using a long outdoor extension cord to run from a plug in another room to your PowerLinc - if it works then it's even more likely a signal issue, possibly on the same circuit as the PowerLinc. Check out the signal troubleshooting page for common causes and solutions to signal issues.

Re: "Failed to establish a link with the device."

I'm trying to get my Indigo/Insteon system working again. The system stopped working about 10 years ago, and I gave-up and shut down the Mac Mini that I was running Indigo on. I use Windows for general computing. Anyway, I'm running Indigo 4 on the Mac Mini (OS X 10.5.8), controlling perhaps 15 Insteon dimmers. A few of the dimmers are working OK, but most don't. Just wonder what's the best way to get things working again? I tried Define and Sync, but no Joy.

My concern is spending time and money and not being able to get things working again. Is there a users group in the Seattle area? Also, it appears Insteon went out of business. That doesn't inspire confidence.
