How to wire Fibaro relay for control of 12v device?

Hi all,

Trying to get my head around how to wire up a Fibaro relay to control a 12v device (lock plate).

If my understanding is correct I'll use a normal UK 3 pin mains plug and wire that to the Live and Neutral terminals of the Relay.

Then I need a separate 12v power supply that I wire one side to the relay IN, then a wire from Q1 to one side of the device, then the other side of the device to the other side of the 12v PSU.

Wiring side makes sense I think.

Physically in terms of any required separation etc what do I need to do?

I have a twin plug socket in exactly the right place. Can I simply wall mount a single gang enclosure, run the wire from the mains plug and the 12v psu up and into the enclosure and job done?

Or are there some concerns I should have around separation etc?

Also...what do I do about the Earth wire from the UK mains plug?

Cheers all

Noel

Specifically which model of fibaro relay are you planning to use?

Computer says no.

Fibaro FGS-222 Dual Relay Switch I think is the one.

Believe there's two options a 1 channel or a 2 channel with just a few £'s between them so figured go for the dual channel in case I come up with a use for the 2nd channel in the future.

Think that's the cheapest way to do what I'm after.

I assume this is in regards to your door lock? :)

If so i suspect you'd be better off with a low voltage relay from Qubino. I'm always warey of controlling low voltage devices with mains devices unless an iscolated relay is involved.

Yes that's right, thought I'd be better starting a separate post just on this bit.

Aah I didn't know the Qubino's were low voltage ,yes that would be much better I'll take a look.
Cheers

Yeah.. that’s what I’d do. I seem to recall the relay 1D being viable for something similar I wanted to do with an interior door (ended up with an alternative solution in the end)

Re: How to wire Fibaro relay for control of 12v device?

Thanks for the tips.
By the looks of things I can get a Qubino relay that needs 24V. So I have 2 options

1 - Use a single 24V power supply, assume something like this will do and cut the connector jack off? http://cpc.farnell.com/powerpax/psk315- ... 20supplies

From there I'd have parallel feeds to the L and N terminals on the Qubino - to L and + to N from another post I've seen, and then the other parallel feeds to the IN and the door latch.

This would require me to get hold of a 24V electric latch plate which I think is possible but may be considerably more expensive

Option 2

Use a 24V power supply for the relay L and N and then have a separate 12V PSU for the door latch.

Have I understood that right?

If there's PSU's available with multiple voltage outputs available simultaneously that would be great but suspect tricky within a neat compact size without resorting to PC PSU's etc. Ideally i'd have something neat like a plug in PSU with two wires coming from it that I can simply cut the connector off and wire into the connector blocks.

Thanks
Noel

Spotted this on amazon JnDee™ 4 way DC splitter Cable Connector Jack for CCTV 3V 6V 9V 12V and 24V power supply, 1x female to 4 x male connector https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B011CMDZJM/ ... VAbEZ6Z13S

If I can get a 24v version of the door latch then any reason why I couldn’t use this to split the power? Current draw I don’t think will be an issue with a door latch and a relay.

Yeah I’d go with a 24v latch.. (well no I wouldn’t as I said before.. but as you’re determined to continue ;) ).. also get some of these.. much easier than cutting the ends of wires and splicing:

Re: How to wire Fibaro relay for control of 12v device?

EDITED below with the answer but i'll leave here in case it helps someone:

All the bits have arrived but i'm a little confused on the wiring!!

So Relay has L and N connections that need to be fed from the 24V PSU

- connection to L
+ connection to N

Then on the relay it has Q1 which is the feed to trigger the 'load' i.e. my door latch.

On the door latch I have two wires which are identical and are simply for power to be applied. When power is applied its unlocked. When power is removed its locked.

So if I connect one wire from the latch to Q1 what do I do with the second wire?

This needs to complete the circuit when Q1 power is applied, what I don't know is whether Q1 is + or - (or whether it matters).

My assumption is I put the second wire into either the L or N terminals just not sure which and the likelihood of me knackering it if I get it wrong.

Answer that I've had from the lock company is that relays normally break the circuit on the negative.

So solution (that I now have working) is to wire one wire from the latch to the positive i.e. the N terminal on the relay in this case and the second wire to the Q1 terminal.

All now working on my test bed :)

Chisels to be taken to the door frame tomorrow hopefully!!!

Thanks all

Noel

Might be worth drawing a diagram of it and posting it.. one for other folks.. and for yourself when inevitably in a couple of years you’ll need to refer back to it

Good point
Image attached. It’s actually in the manual which once someone had explained to me now makes perfect sense!!
