Re: Automate the non moving bit of a lock?!

So if this is just turning into my personal geeks log and its dull as hell to everyone else then apologies!!

Parts turned up and as per this thread viewtopic.php?f=58&t=20438

I have the relay wired up on my desk controlling the door latch.

Bonus: I've also wired up a momentary switch which also triggers the latching.

Thinking here is that instead of using the 'latch' on the yale lock which we use constantly and always end up wondering when we leave the house whether we left the door on the latch that now we can just 'latch' the door using the button/switch and then when we leave the house I can setup a notification to tell me when latch has been on for >2 hours or when latch is on and none of us are present in the house (based on geofency and our phones).

So the techy bit is good. Now just need to figure out the chiselling the wood out of the door frame bit and possibly trying to paint the very black and obvious door latch!

I'll take some pics as I get things installed in case there's anyone interested :)

Re: Automate the non moving bit of a lock?!

I’ll be interested to see how well it works. And yeah I’d definitely go with leaving the actual lock bit locked all the time and having a button next to the door to activate the relay and open the latchy bit.

Perhaps post a video of it all working before you go live in case it helps spot a potential issue?

Re: Automate the non moving bit of a lock?!

Cheers will do

One issue found last night, just holding the latch against the edge of the door in unlocked mode and try to pull the door open

Ie try to get the pressure of the door and the retractable bit of the yale. Lock to push the released latch out of the way.

It doesn’t! The motion path of the released latch flap when released is circular and the flat end of the latch seems to not apply force in the right way.

Now this could be because I’m just holding it and when I get it fixed to the door it will be fine but I’m not going to get the chisels out until I’m sure!

Will call the lock company this morning

Re: Automate the non moving bit of a lock?!

One thing to keep in made when using a lock release mechanism if your door opens out the latch and release are accessible from the outside. This leaves it venerable to sliding the latch with a pocket knife or screw driver. When the door opens in the release is on the inside and makes sliding the latch much harder. So if your door opens out you should also install a latch guard. Easy to install and not expensive. Amazon has them.

Those look good. Seriously tempted to get one for my side gate but as the keypad would just go zwave to indigo texecom plugin to my alarm to the gate lock it's expensive and extra complexity when a direct wired one to the alarm would be cheaper and more simple. Well, once I get my head round the programming.

Re: Automate the non moving bit of a lock?!

ITS IN!!! And it works :)

Bit more ‘making it look nice’ to be done but it’s in and it works great!

I’m blessed with both plug sockets and an unused telephone socket right by the door so phone point has been pulled out and is now the switch to latch the door. Poor placement but will do for now.

Things I need to do (advice hugely appreciated)

Decide and implement the logic in indigo (think I’m ok with that bit)

Figure out how to paint or make the latch less big and black!!

Figure out how to have some kind of visible indicator to show the door is latched ie open. Ideally a green LED but not sure how I could wire that so that it’s on when the door is unlatched.

Anyways am pretty chuffed that I have it working, thanks for all the help and advice from you all.

Re: Automate the non moving bit of a lock?!

Hmm I’ll see if I can find the link on eBay but I have a relay that I think would work perfect for you.. dual relay.. if wired correctly would give a green light when unlocked, red when locked and nothing if there’s a power issue (which could be handy). I use mine for that with my front door lock.

Re: Automate the non moving bit of a lock?!

Massive satisfaction this morning :)

Eldest son is 16, isn't the biggest fan of the techy home automation stuff, just doesn't 'see the point'.

This morning I went out with his brother, he'd been at a mates over night and wasn't back when we left.

I was 99% certain I'd be getting a call saying where are you I havent got my keys!

Sure enough the call came. I sympathised with him "oh if only we had a smart door lock that I could unlock remotely" I said.

Probably shouldn't get this much satisfaction from things like this but oh it felt good :)

Triggered the latch, he could get in and he now owes me much techy appreciation!!

Am going to implement a charging scheme maybe £1 a time as I actually want to encourage him to carry his keys as the chances of his future house having this setup are minimal lol

Disown him. And tell the police where he hides his weed.
