Your log message analysis looks correct to me. The lock is sending a command that the bolt is jammed (but locked) after the unlock command. Since this happens even with the door open, I suspect it has a hardware malfunction and needs to be replaced.
Or he can hack around it via the temporarily disable trigger technique you mentioned above. Another approach would be to create a virtual device that controls the lock, and have it execute an Action Group for the unlock that sends a status request command immediately (or with a few second delay) after the unlock command. Then one could control the lock indirectly via the virtual device.
