Polling wall switch as often as possible?

I've got one of these
Code: Select all
Z-Wave                          Indigo Device "Dining Room" Z-Wave Properties:
Indigo Z-Wave Version: 1.0.371
Node ID: 14
Model: Dimmer Switch (LRM-AS)
Model ID: 44573034
Manufacturer: Evolve
Manufacturer ID: 0113
Protocol Version: 3.42
Application Version: 5.41
Model Definition Version: 0
Library Type: 6
Class Name: Dimmable Scene Switch
Class Hierarchy: 04 : 11 : 04
Command Class Base: 26
Command Versions: 20v1 70v1 72v1 73v1 86v1 26v1 27v1 2Bv1 2Cv1

that has been working fine for as long as I've had Indigo. But having set up a new trigger based on when the switch's state changes, I noticed that it didn't trigger. I realized it was set to poll once an hour. When I change that to "as often as possible" the trigger fires off in an acceptable amount of time.

Am I really looking at problems by doing this? The switch is mains powered of course, so no problem with battery drain. But am I compromising my z-wave network?

SmartThings refugee, so happy to be on Indigo. Monterey on a base M1 Mini w/Harmony Hub, Hue, DomoPad, Dynamic URL, Device Extensions, HomeKitLink, Grafana, Plex, uniFAP, Fantastic Weather, Nanoleaf, LED Simple Effects, Bond Home, Camect.

Re: Polling wall switch as often as possible?

I wouldn't say compromising. Congesting, yes. For a device configured like that, Indigo waits until there is no other Z-Wave traffic scheduled, then sends out the command. It keeps the network busy, and if you have a lot of devices broadcasting (sensors, etc), then there will likely be more collisions. But Z-Wave (unlike Insteon) handles collisions pretty/very well. I wouldn't have a lot of devices doing it, but one or two is probably ok.

Re: Polling wall switch as often as possible?

So I just uncovered this problem as well. I have several GE Z-Wave switches, all set to poll only on activity, but they don't send Indigo any information when they are operated locally at the switch. While I thought this may have been a firmware issue, oddly enough one of the 3.9 versions work, while others don't. The lone Z-Wave Dimmer also seems to communicate well.

My next thought was that some of these switches just have bad Z-Wave network connections, but all of the Z-Wave switches can be triggered by Insteon Keypad Links, which all work 99% of the time, so the Indigo TO Z-wave connection is fine. Z-Wave locks all send info to Indigo as needed and expected, but different devices, I know.

Right now, polling is set to "Only when activity is detected" on the problem devices, but I'm going to change them all to 5 minutes. This will only be a short term fix for me, as timing is everything..
