IOLinc Input w/ Home Alarm Output

Hi,

I have an IOLinc in which I want to use as an input to connect to my alarm (DSC PC1555MX) and sense whether the alarm is armed or not. I've been able to read through the alarm manual and program it's "PGM" outputs to activate when the system is armed.

I've also used a multimeter to determine that it "activates" the output connectors [Aux+ (positive) and PGM1 (ground)] by sending 13V through it when the alarm is armed and 0V when the alarm is not armed.

I read that the IOLinc can only handle 5V on the "Sense" input and so I'm not sure which inputs I need to connect my alarm to AND if/how I can reduce the voltage to <5V. I'm trying to figure it out through various google searches and so I think I need to use some resistors or something... ?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!!

Paul

resistors limit current, but to lower the voltage you would use a voltage regulator such as the LM7805:

They work by dissipating the excess voltage with heat...in severe cases you will see a heat sink attached with some heat gel in between.

Thank you so much!

I'll post an update with how it all went when I finish setting it up.
