Indigo controllable power strip

Looking for a better solution than a bunch of controllable wall warts for use in my equipment rack. Prefer something intended for installation in a 19" equipment rack. HTTP or socket communications are fine.

Suggestions?

I THINK this was mentioned by someone here as being compatible with Indigo.

Actually, I see someone on Amazon says he uses it with Indigo and it even reports out power usage.

That looks pretty good. No rack ears, but I can deal.

The power use reporting on it with Indigo isn't so great. They used different endpoints for the relay controls than they did for reporting the energy usage, so Indigo gets confused. I need to work around the problem by having Indigo map the messages to the correct devices.

I would think it would be easy to make a driver for the digital logger switches. They look pretty cool and I think have a rack mount. I’ve used their relays before, never tried their ip switches.

I use the Aviosys IP Power 4 port 9258S Web Power Switch http://www.aviosys.com/9258st.html and control them either via http or the Indigo IP9258 plugin by @NickSmith http://forums.indigodomo.com/viewtopic.php?f=134&t=8977 which controls On/Off/Toggle and Status.
I also have the 8 port rack mount version but cannot get the plugin to work with it, I have tried but am a Python numpty but I expect you could revamp it quite easily.



They also do a 9258S+Ping that can ping an address and reboot when it does not receive a reply after a time or number of pings, handy as a standalone unit for the router/modem but again I have 2 that I cannot control via the plugin as it has a different reply from the switch.
I have bought them all from eBay for around 20-30 pounds each and the US versions have a T at the end in place of the UK S models and a couple of 4 port T models are on US eBay at $38.00 at present.

Looking on eBay now they appear to be over £100. When did you buy them so cheap? They look like something I need for my rack.

New ones are but of the 8 x 4 port used ones I have purchased they are between 20 to 30 pounds each and the 8 Port was 50.00 pounds.
In fact I have 2 arriving tomorrow and both were 20 plus 5.50 delivery each and they are to replace the 8 port as I cannot get the 9258 Indigo plugin to work with it (basically I can't program in Python to convert the 4 port plugin to work with the 8 port).
8 port do not come up on eBay very often, the 4 ports are more common.

I bought an used APC AP9211 on eBay for $20. This is exactly what you want. Rack mountable, IP controlled PDU. It is OLD, but was in brand new condition and works great. eBay has tons of them available under $50 all the time.

...and there’s already an Indigo Plug-in for it.

You got lucky on eBay with that APC AP9211. Can't find one for less than 3x that price right now.

Ha! $20 and I really can't say enough about the condition of this thing. The shipper 'packed' it in basically the side of a cardboard box folded around the PDU and its cord and then taped shut. I got the package and thought I just wasted $20, but inside the unit was PRISTINE. Not a mark on it.

On the other hand, these AP9211s are OLD. And mine looks to be particularly old. I think the manufacture date is in the 90s.

The biggest challenge on this thing was just getting into it. Resetting the password is an unbelievable chore, and it turns out the old units were even more difficult. And there's no way to set the IP address or anything without getting into the unit. Basically, I finally found a support forum on APC/Schneider Electric's site and I posted the serial number of the unit, after which a support rep posted that unit's individual password. You connect to it with a serial cable, then enter any username and the unit specific password for that unit, THEN you can temporarily access the unit with user/pwd apc/apc. So you log in with those credentials, set your own credentials, and set the IP address and other essential things, reboot and then you can login via the network. The unit needed a firmware update as well.

But once you get there, it is awesome. Nice, solid, enterprise grade hardware. It's old, but it works just fine.

But back on price... I was somewhat vigilant and bid on a few units before I snagged this one. I was so encouraged by this thing (and have a large rack full of AV equipment some of which I'd like to reboot remotely or on a schedule. I just snagged an AP7931 (16 outlet vertical switched PDU) for $70 (and free shipping). That took even more attempts, but it arrived 2 days ago. Looks to be in good shape but this one needs an RJ11 serial cable to reset/configure it and that doesn't arrive until tomorrow.

I've got one of the Aeon Labs power strips and it works well...I learned about the out-of-whack power reporting from Matt after I got it. Price had dropped to about $65 on Amazon.

So I'm really hoping (but totally not pressuring) that Matt & Jay can tweak the device to properly report the power consumption. It powers my main servers and all so I'd like to keep track of what each system consumes...if they get that ironed out I might buy 4-5 more for every "electronics" hub I have (home theater, computers/switches/monitors, etc.)

If you’re interested, I wrote an AppleScript to control my digital loggers ethernet outlet. I made a control page that will perform on/off/cycle based on variable substitution.

Of course it is written in AppleScript and addresses the Indigo server because it uses variable substitution to trigger and sends curl. Since it is soon to be obsolete… … it would be great if someone could just copy it to python. It doesn’t really need a plug-in if you are OK with making a simple control page that just substitutes the correct variable.
