a program can create a variable with a name that includes a "." (e.g. ipNumber-192.168.1.1)
When I want to do this manually or want to edit one that contains a "." Indigo does not allow that.
Is that observation correct?
If so, should "." be avoided in a variable name: any situation where that creates a problem in indigo?

Correct, it looks like the UI edit field input filter we are using is more restrictive than the checking we do on the scripting side. I cannot think of anything that the "." character would break, so assuming you can live with the UI discrepancy I think it will be okay.
