Device won't start

So i've had a pre-existing setup running (and oops i didn't backup the config file and it's been wiped.. never mind

I don't seem to be getting errors, but for some reason the Server device that i created just won't start:

I've tried deleting the device and re-creating it but no joy. Also restarting the plugin.

Try to start Homebridge from the command line and see if it works. The device in Indigo is only a shortcut to try to start/stop/restart what's already installed on your system and isn't required to actually START the HBB daemon in the first place.

If HB starts on its own then the Indigo device should reflect that.

Ah, now.. that DIDN'T load because the config file had reset to the original indigo port (i have to make it run on 8080 for boring reasons)

BUT that hasn't stopped it loading. I changed the port in Plugins > Buddy > Settings. Now when i launch it from terminal it shows up with the one item i've configured using the GUI, so it's definitely writing to the config file, but as soon as i try 'turn on' the server item in indigo it immediately turns off.

Now interestingly when it's running in the terminal log events are coming through to indigo:

Oh and i just noticed as soon as i launch home bridge in the terminal the device turns on.. so it must just be an issue with it starting the service.

That port is important! It looks like everything is good now. The "is alive" state of the device is based on, essentially, pinging that port number and see if it replies, if it does then HBB thinks the service is alive and well - so if you had something else on that port then HBB would have gotten a false positive.

Ah, So does that mean i still have to run HB in the background in the terminal?

Yes, for now until the next (hopefully) release comes out that incorporates the entirety of managing HB and HB-Indigo into it. Think of the device in HBB as a bookmark to the already operational HB system you already have in place, so follow Webdecks instructions on auto-starting HB with your Mac. Or, alternatively, you can not do that and just hand-start the device in Indigo if you want, it should start it now that you have the ports figured out.

Now to start the task of adding all the devices and assigning them to rooms!

This will come up as you make changes to the devices associated with Homebridge and it is by design. So, if you change the name of a device, create an alias, create a wrapper or change the config in any way this will happen. Alternatively you can do it by hand via the top menu system and disable automatic behavior by going into the configuration and turning off the auto restarts.

I'm not sure how but it seemed to get into a bad state. Disabling the plugin, disabling home bridge, restarting the plugin then restarting homebridge seems to have stopped it from happening.

So just to clarify.. as i'm going through setting devices to "treatas" items.. nothing shows up automatically until i go into terminal and kill homebridge then restart it.. that's expected behaviour right? (I'm just paranoid of getting this all setup again only to find something's not right and have to do it alllllll again!)

No, that's not supposed to be it at all . It should be that the only things that show up in the Treat As lists are devices that you have INCLUDED into Homebridge from the first option, that way you don't try to add stuff that you didn't want in there in the first place.

Sorry i'll rephrase .. nothing i CHANGE will appear on homebridge apps until disable homebridge in the terminal and reload it? As in i've got 70 odd devices showing now all as lights. If i go and assign a door lock to the treatas to get it to show as a door lock in the home app i need to terminate homebridge in the terminal, then reload it?
