Indigo Touch and the iPad

We've received a lot of questions regarding the iPad. As we said in our March 2010 newsletter, we think the iPad is a fantastic new product that will reach millions of people who currently don't use computers. We are definitely not in the camp that thinks Apple missed the target. Rather, we think that most of the negative reviews were from people who completely missed the point. We also think the iPad represents a huge step forward for home automation.

While we don't pre-announce features, there are a couple of things that we do want to share with you. First and foremost, Indigo Touch 1.5 works as-is on the iPad. So if you're an early adopter, you're good to go.

Second, we are actively evaluating how to make Indigo Touch a full-fledged iPad citizen. Obviously, we'll increase the size of control pages so that they use the entire screen. However, we think there are a lot of other possibilities and we'll be working through those as well. So, while we're deciding how best to take advantage of the iPad's larger screen and other features, use Indigo Touch 1.5 when you receive your new iPad.

Our current plans (which, of course, are subject to change) are to release a dot release to the current Indigo Touch 1.5 before iPhone OS 4.0 ships. This release will be a minimal release to accommodate the 4.0 OS. We will then follow up with Indigo Touch 2.0, which will not only include iPad goodness, but will also potentially take advantage of other iPhone OS 4.0 features. We hope to release that around the same time the iPad gets iPhone OS 4.x sometime this fall.

We are currently neck deep in Indigo 5.0 development and we want to get to a certain stable point before one of us moves over to spend a lot of time on Indigo Touch and iPhone OS 4.x. And, in our view, it doesn't make a lot of sense doing a big release just for the iPad and iPhone OS 3.2 when we'll just have to turn around and do another non-trivial release to take advantage of the 4.0 features.

As always, we appreciate your support and feedback. Also, we're curious as to how many of our users are expecting to get an iPad. Feel free to take the poll.

Re: Indigo Touch and the iPad

Indigo Touch 1.6.0 was just submitted to the App Store - let's hope the approval is quick! And, no, I'm not going to tell you what's in it, you'll just have to wait until it's approved... :D
