got my shake ( kickstarter earth quake detector) up and running .. just the first steps.. and the network is growing..

Will try to add some plugin to indigo to get movement warnings or some graphs.

The setup is very sensitive. it must not be next to AC, vents, speaker, washing machines, fridge, motors (garage door)
Best would on a concrete slab with constant 60ºF temp, no wind no rain .. walking by it will register

ps: mine is the one in the middle of dallas

Very cool! I wonder if you could place one or more in your house - perhaps attached to a joist - to analyze movement "signatures" within the house to determine occupancy. Similar to the way electrical signatures are being used by some power meters to determine what appliance is running. I'm sure my 220lbs and gate is quite different from my wife's 110lbs and shorter stride. Thats could be a fun project to play with!!!

Interesting, though in my house it would be sending out "IT'S THE BIG ONE" alerts every two minutes my son is home since, apparently, eight years olds cannot walk anyone unless it involves getting ready to go somewhere like school (in which case they crawl slower than a snail). In all seriousness, though, that could be a cool "someone is on the porch" type sensor - I've seen a couple of expensive pressure plates (Insteon I think?) but I think your idea would work on a joist under the porch.

In terms of actual earthquake detection, would be neat to have multiple sensors and it only "registers" if all registered at the same time (to help eliminate false positives).

Great!
Here we don't have a earthquake region but Terry's idea is cool, to detect occupancy - if so sensitive.

Super cool Karl - thanks for posting - if enough of these get deployed I think it could really help with information gathering and understanding (which is always a good thing) - I'm interested to hear more, if and when you have time to share how you think it is working (once you have it operating for a while) !

coming home (slamming the door) and walking up the stairs... this has real potential

ordered a second to put 2 into my house, front and back

this is a real good presence sensor

have now 2 raspberry shakes.

=== one inside = detect movements, door open/ close
=== one outside in a 2 feet deep hole sitting on a concrete slab covered with styrofoam on top and side, then wrapped into a plastic bag and finally covered with earth .
The PEO cable goes up through a U back down into the open earth then into the pipe back into the house.
The end of the pipes are filled with silicone so that water does not come in.
The 2 pipes do not connect so that movements of the outside pipe (e.g. rain, wind) do not enter the box with the pi.
Here some pictures of the setup:

The raspberry shake underground is ~ factor 10 better in terms of background..

Waiting for some earthquakes .. when they do heavy fracking again we will get some at strength ~ 2-4

will try to integrate them into indigo .. have my next project
possibilities:
1. earthquakes , only interesting for folks on the west coast, and fracking areas. - (in the US)
2. movement in the house .. and after some heavy programming may be we can do signal pattern analysis to distinguish e.g. door open/close, some one walking, washing machine is running, ac on,.. but thats a long way to go
