Strange network/OSX problem

Hi :)

since a few days I have a very very strange problem.
I have a MacMini running OSX El Capitan which has always run very smoothly.
It is attached via Ethernet cable to a gigabit switch.

Then, on the wall, I have an Android Tablet which runs HousePad. Never ever had a problem, but since a few days, every time I open the app (actually it is always opens, only the screen goes off), it cannot connect to Indigo, and the whole MacMini becomes unreachable; ping is not working anymore, I have to restart it with the power button.
It is an headless MacMini so it is hard to debug at the time of the event. I have to had a look at the console and log messages.

Bye,
Marco

Re: Strange network/OSX problem

The console logs should tell you quite a bit about what is going on. Worst case, and it's not that bad, a total reload of that Mini might help stabilize it.

My Modest Contributions to Indigo:

HomeKit Bridge | Device Extensions | Security Manager | LCD Creator | Room-O-Matic | Smart Dimmer | Scene Toggle | Powermiser | Homebridge Buddy

Re: Strange network/OSX problem

Can you ping the Mini from any other device/computer when the Android tablet loses connection?

Re: Strange network/OSX problem

No, when I see the problem on the Android Tablet, then I cannot ping anymore the MacMini, and also I do not see it connected to my router.
Strange problem; now the Android Tablet is off, just want to see if it was a coincidence (but I do not think so).

Bye,
Marco

Re: Strange network/OSX problem

Sounds to me like they're both trying to use the same IP address. Check your DHCP settings. Is one or both of them using a static IP address?

Re: Strange network/OSX problem

Both of them static, and of course different;

MacMini: 192.168.1.103
Tablet: 192.168.1.188

Re: Strange network/OSX problem

how complicated is your network?

do you have sonos systems? They build their own parallel network and that WILL create problems if you connect them at several places to your network (experience, took me several weeks to figure that out). They need spanning tree capable network routers/ switches..

Do you have other network problems?

just to get some more info.

Re: Strange network/OSX problem

Yes, I have Sonos, one Play:1 which is connected via WiFi, but at the moment to another SSID (Tablet to another SSID and MacMini via Ethernet).
I also have sometimes problems with Sonos, when clicking on the "play" button (directly on the Sonos), it blinks amber, but if I play with the Sonos App is everything fine...

Actual static, or DHCP reservations? If static, what's the DHCP range on your router? Any chance the router is assigning either of those addresses to another device?

Re: Strange network/OSX problem

I would try and disconnect the Sonos and see if anything changes

Re: Strange network/OSX problem

The are actual static; the DHCP reservation pool is from .220 to .253.
I will have a look to my complete setup.

Regarding Sonos...which is strange is that till 3 days was everything fine.
(BTW, viewtopic.php?f=142&t=8055&p=122393#p122393)

I will switch to pure VDSL modem + Ubiquiti USG in the next week, so I will reconfigure everything :)

Bye,
Marco

Re: Strange network/OSX problem

Oh, one thing I forgot, when the problem occurs, I see the Indigo log flooded with fingscan logs (I have to retrieve them...currently I am not at home).

Re: Strange network/OSX problem

Then Switch oft fingscan for a while and See if it happens again.

I remember some circumstances when fingscan goes off the rail.
- some devices constantly change ip numbers
- too high a frequency in the internal loop ( in crease loop seconds in config)
- use ping if down

Re: Strange network/OSX problem

Hi all,

the problem occured again yesterday; I have the feeling that the Android tablet has nothing to do with it, but, I simply see the problem when I use that tablet; I use it to set Home/Away mode (it hangs on the wall near the main door), so I saw that the problem occured because I had no more connection to Indigo Server; same problem with iPhone/iPad/iMac around the house.

I had a quick look at the console and it was full of "Indigo Plugin Host reached time out" (something like this), but I think that is due to the fact that the network on the MacMini had some problems and that plugin needed the Internet connection working (WUnderground?).

In the weekend, if a have time, I will have a more detailed look, but with a 40 days old baby I have not so much time :D
