Insteon motion sensor

Hi

Does any one have any tips for using motion sensors to controls lights?

Basically I have added both to indigo. I have triggers set up to turn on lights.

When the motion occurs I see the red light flash on the device. When I check indigo activity log many times the sensor doesn't show as turning on.

Does anyone have any tips?

Does the motion sensor need to be linked to each device?

Re: Insteon motion sensor

That doesn't seem like a "why won't it turn on" problem.

Seems like a motion sensor configuration problem. I don't have any Insteon, but if one of my z-wave motions wasn't sending activity, I would start with how it's defined in Indigo, or how it talks to the controller. Does the controller work for other devices? If not, start there.

SmartThings refugee, so happy to be on Indigo. Monterey on a base M1 Mini w/Harmony Hub, Hue, DomoPad, Dynamic URL, Device Extensions, HomeKitLink, Grafana, Plex, uniFAP, Fantastic Weather, Nanoleaf, LED Simple Effects, Bond Home, Camect.

Re: Insteon motion sensor

If the motion sensor's light flashes but you don't see anything in the Indigo Event Log, then the signal from the MS didn't make it to the PowerLinc. It's most likely a distance issue - the motion sensor is RF only so it could just be too far or have too many obstacles between it and the nearest RF to power line device (or your PowerLinc). Temporarily bring it back to the PowerLinc and trigger it on/off a few times. If it consistently works, then you'll probably need to add another dual-band device somewhere between the PowerLinc and the MS to relay the signal.

Debugged further. If I link motion sensor directly to Insteon light switch with no Indigo it turns on fine.

Any ideas?

Re: Insteon motion sensor

Nothing's changed from my previous post - it's likely the signal path between the switch and the MS is cleaner/clearer/closer than from the MS to the PowerLinc.

Re: Insteon motion sensor

I know what you are saying but are you saying the PowerLinc is needed only for Indigo, but for Motion Sensor to Switch its a closer distance? Do both go through PowerLinc?

Re: Insteon motion sensor

When you directly link two Insteon devices then no - it doesn't go through the PowerLinc.

Re: Insteon motion sensor

Ah, ok let me try that tonight and see if it makes it better.

Alternatively if I cannot reach the PowerLinc range, is there extenders?

Re: Insteon motion sensor

You can use an Insteon Range Extender but I would just get a dual-band device and place it somewhere between the two. That way you get another usable device along with the mesh strengthening.

Re: Insteon motion sensor

I have many dual band devices between the motion sensor and the powerlinc though. Any other ideas?

Re: Insteon motion sensor

If it's not a distance issue, then you have some signal noise that's keeping the MS signal from reaching the PowerLinc reliably. Check out the signal troubleshooting page.
