12 V AC switch

Forum rules

Questions about hardware that can be controlled by Indigo (but not through the interfaces and plugins listed). If Indigo doesn't support some bit of hardware you're interested in, and you don't find a 3rd Party Plugin for it, add it to this forum. Be sure to include links to as much information as you can find about it.

Note: adding it here does not mean we're going to add it - in fact it's possible one of our 3rd party developers may decide to write a plugin for it. We add hardware/features based on a lot of different factors beyond just having a request for it.

12 V AC switch

I have some 12 V AC garden lamps and would like to switch them individually.

There is no 120V near by. I have looked, but not found a switch with relay that would work with 12V AC as power.. Any one aware of one beside an arduino/relay solution?

Re: 12 V AC switch

You can do it any number of ways, but here is my special sauce for outdoor soup: I use a weatherproof plastic box about 12"x12"x 5" deep, I buy a couple of 10" long DIN-Rail's, mount them in the box. I use a suitable I/O device (Insteon or SmartEnit or your choice....there are many) which can trigger the relay of choice (a DIN-rail mounted relay!), and if required, I buy a 12VAC or 12VDC transformer (also DIN rail mountable). I put it all in the box with the correctly configured wires for the desired currents... and the relays have contacts which will handle the current needed)... and it's soup.

Just about everything I mentioned here will depend on your needs, your wattage, your voltage requirements (AC or DC), whether or not you need dimming... and don't forget to consider the losses when running low voltages outdoors. Amazon.com has just about everything I mentioned and I've personally used the following products (which you will have to choose for your needs):

Re: 12 V AC switch

the smartenit EZIO8SA INSTEON-Compatible Input/Output Controller is was looking for.. I want to just switch 12V LED's on and OFF ~ 5-10 watt each .. thanks . But $120+ for a simple switch is on the high side.

Re: 12 V AC switch

Any time. I wasn't promoting the SmartEnit device for your application and as I said, you would have to select the "right" components for your application. I was just attempting to help by suggesting a path to solve the problem you posed about 12VAC and relay's and you would know what is best.
