2413U and EasyDAQ stopped working

Hi,

I've been an Indigo user since I bought V2 back in 2007 and this is my first problem, so that's pretty good... :-)

I've had V6 running on a dedicated Mac Mini for about 2 years. It runs 24/7 with a 2413U and has been flawless, until this past week when all of my timed events stopped working. Then we noticed that a bunch of light switches were responding really slowly or not at all (I think these are linked units). My EasyDAQ also stopped working.

The red "Powerlinc Modem" at the bottom left of the client screen is crossed out. Sometimes there is part of a green bar and other times, there is no green. This seems USB port related. I searched old posts which led me to do the following, none of which helped:

- Replaced the 2413U w a different 2413U and an old 2414U
- Moved 2414/13U out of the cabinet and powered them from a different circuit
- Replaced the USB cable
- Tried all USB ports on the Mac
- Reconfigured interface ports
- Upgraded to Indigo V7
- Reset the 2414/13Us many times
- Restarted Indigo server and the Mac multiple times

Here is a bit from my log file after restarting the server:

Mar 12, 2017, 9:37:13 PM
Interface Failure failed to establish connection with serial interface PowerLinc Modem on port usbserial-141
EasyDAQ Relay Card Error "EasyDAQ I/O" serial port open error: [Errno 2] could not open port /dev/cu.usbserial-147: [Errno 2] No such file or directory: '/dev/cu.usbserial-147'
EasyDAQ Relay Card Error make sure the USB virtual serial port driver (ex: FTDI driver) is installed and correct port is selected
EasyDAQ Relay Card Error silently retrying serial connection every 5 seconds
WebServer client connected
WebServer started on port 8176 -- digest authentication enabled
Started plugin "AD2USB Alarm Interface 1.5.3"
AD2USB Alarm Interface Plugin setup completed. Ready to open link to the ad2usb in Basic mode.
AD2USB Alarm Interface ad2usb opened for communication at /dev/cu.usbserial-A1018WVJ

It seems to see the AD2USB but I can't really know for sure as I've never gotten that configured properly.

Any idea as to what is going on?

Thanks very much,

Jeff

Re: 2413U and EasyDAQ stopped working

First, disable both the EasyDAQ and AD2USB plugins, unplug their USB cables from the Mac, and then open the Insteon interface config dialog and make sure that only a single usbserial-XXXXXX serial port shows up. Select it (if not already selected) and close the dialog. Does Insteon start working?

Basically, disconnect everything from USB except the minimum stuff: keyboard/mouse and PowerLinc. If that works, then you can start adding stuff back one at a time until things start going wrong. Then we can focus on that.

Re: 2413U and EasyDAQ stopped working

Thanks Jay.

I disabled the EasyDAQ and A2DUSB plugins, unplugged those 2 devices, and restarted the server. Success! I am back up and running. I had previously tried disconnecting the USB cables to the EasyDAQ and the A2DUSB with no luck. It seems that stopping the plugins did it.

Then I added back (in steps) the plugins and cables for both devices. Curiously, I am still up and running. This is odd because this is the exact configuration that wouldn't talk to the 2413 earlier. Did temporarily disabling those plugins change something?

A clue did appear -- the system is not talking to the EasyDAQ. Did that cause this whole thing? I have tried another USB cable to the EasyDAQ with the same result. Time to replace it?

Here is a copy of my log at startup. Are the repeated entries indicating started EasyDAQ and A2DUSB plugins normal (underlined below)?

Thanks for the help. It's nice to have most things back up and running.

Jeff

Re: 2413U and EasyDAQ stopped working

There are several repeats - it sorta looks like it was two different attempts to start the server.

Have you tried reselecting the serial port in the EasyDAQ plugin? That port name doesn't look right to me...

Re: 2413U and EasyDAQ stopped working

Jay:

I''m having a similar issue like the one above. Out of the blue, mine stopped working while away from home several days. Thought I would continue this thread to keep it in the same family of problems.

I get the following messages:

Bottom left status line: PowerLinc Modem (is red and has a strike-thru font)
Dialog box: Failed to establish connection or open serial port to interface. Make usre the correct interface type and port are chosen in the Preferences dialog and that they serial device or adapter are plugged in correctly.

My attempted “fixes”:
1. Stopped the local server and then restarted it. (several times)
2. Unplugged the PowerLinc module (USB Dual Band #2413U) and replugged in (several times)
3. Confirmed proper Insteon Powerline Interface
4. Tried the PowerLinc Troubleshooting – “Reset PowerLinc and Sync Links’
5. Restored database (from Time Machine) to a date when the system was working properly.
6. Rebooted iMac numerous times
7. Disabled all PlugIns and restarted server (along with unplugging module after diabling PlugIns.

I still have the same errors and I'm unable to use my system. Any suggestions?

This is really causing some problems at my house. My wife was flustered about getting our lights on in the house (many of which come on automatically) until I told her we had to manually use the light switches until this is resolved! :D

Unfortunately, these errors:

Indicate that your database file is corrupt. You might want to try a different backup. However, that's likely not related to your PowerLinc issue.

Have you unplugged all other USB devices and made sure that the PowerLinc is directly plugged directly into the Mac?

Re: 2413U and EasyDAQ stopped working

Jay:

Thank you for the help and the additional steps to try.

Yesterday, I tried unplugging all other USB devices from the computer even though nothing new has been introduced in the last year to my system. That did not fix the problem.

But, I started looking more at the 2413U device itself and noticed there were no status lights coming on. And, my attempts to reset the device per the users manual did not provide any expected audible beeps. So, at that point I concluded that this device may be dead.

I had SmartHome ship me a new device and it arrived today. The change-out fixed the problem. So, in my case it was a failed 2413U. Thanks again for the help yesterday.
