basic question about RS232 abstraction

Sorry if this has been covered elsewhere and I haven't found it yet. I'm just starting to play with the plugin SDK to see what interesting things I can get my pre-Ethernet home theater components to do and I have a question of basic architecture.

I have several RS232-controlled devices connected to a StarTech NETRS232 ethernet bridge. Is there an accepted convention for abstracting "how to get to a serial port on the NETRS232" from "how to interact with an Oppo DVB-983H via RS232"? It doesn't seem very flexible to write a "DVB-983H connected to a NETRS232" plugin.

Secondary question... was it a dumb decision not to use a GC100?

Re: basic question about RS232 abstraction

Here is some documentation on adding a serial port selection popup to plugins This forum thread and this one might also help.

Lastly, for an example plugin that does serial communication, you can open the EasyDAQ plugin Indigo ships with to view the XML and .py source files.

Hopefully that will help, and let us know if you get hung up somewhere.
